Heres the apk for 3uk's Skype app
This is ment to be free to use (i.e. free voice call to other skype users) FOR 3UK Users ONLY!!!

so far it only supports Voice and Texts, NO Video calls yet :(
for Video calls use the Normal Skype (NOT free to use on 3UK) app on market

it the offical skype app from 3UK
seems to run on most android devices
runs Perfectly on my HTC Dream (t-mobile g1) and Samsung Galaxy s

to log in make sure your usein 3UK's APN (apn.three.co.uk) and not Wi-Fi

i expect if you edit the xml file for it you could get it working for other 3 areas
but i havnt the time or know how to get it done soz :(

the akp is just in a normal zip file so unzip and ur away

---

"Skype_0.10.0.16_hutch_live" is the one 3UK pimp's at the moment

but the "Skype_1.5.0.13_3UK_live" has more options and stuff

i supose there will have been a combatability issue or something silly like that with the 1.5.0.13 so they went back to 0.10.16

personaly i use 1.5.0.13 on both my dream and my galaxy np
dream usein super D [cant remember what version off hand]
galaxy useing 2.3.4 stock + cf root

Answer: i 'THiNK' "Skype_1.5.0.13_3UK_live" is latest
BUT: 3UK are Useing "Skype_0.10.0.16_hutch_live"

This is just an FYI of what I've come across. I have the HTC Magic configured on the ATT US hsdpa network. I ran a port scan and found out AT&T is still not complying with what i thought was settled. AT&T blocks port 5060 which is the port that the SIP protocol functions. So, when you try to use skype, just like on the iphone, it will only work over wifi only and not over the network...but not because of the skype program for android, but because of att blocking the port....
if anyone has any information or comments please reply....I'd like to know more as well

i think there will be a large chance once we find where is the xml that contains the server address and edit it like what we've done to the iskoot client registry

Thank you very much for providing the apk file.

I have difficulty to download it neither from Market nor Three.co.uk.

It works well on my newly purchased HTC Tattoo with 3 PAYG.

check the data limits on the current sims.. It's 90 days free for a total of 150mb so not too great.

I got two free sims with the last deal, I get 30 days unlimited data for 30 days for £5 don't need to topup voice as well.

Thanks for this awesome find,

I just spent ages creating an apk which automatically stuck in the settings for the 3 network, then upon searching the forum again i found your little gem of a post =/. think i should have searched harder!!

Creating an APK with different country settings isnt that difficult, you need to find the auto-signer tool, and modify the startup properties in /res/raw. although upon further investigation this ver of iskoot doesnt have those files so the settings must be stored elsewhere. so you would definately need the plain (non three) version of the iskoot apk.

autosigner and instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503007

ive linked back to your 1st post (hope you dont mind) to point people in this direction.

As we all may now know this app doesn't work on 2.1 :(

But if i could draw any dev's to look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=652248

Its a version that works on 2.1 and works in the same way, just its locked to verizon, and we would need to enter 3 details somehow.

I'm not a dev, so i'm hoping someone else may have an idea!! :)

Mattyguk,

Have you tried the Iskoot for android i posted in my "3 uk iskoot thread"?

it is in beta but it seems to work on the android builds i have used.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538306

I could do with some more testers.

let me know how you get on.

mattyguk

Tried it, but gave up as i really wanted the skype app.

I have since tried again, and i either get the 'already signed in on another mobile' or it sits forever at the signing in screen. I'll keep trying though.

Don't suppose you've had a look at adjusting the verizon skype app as that might work on 2.1 and maybe only in my eye's but would look nicer than a modded iskoot.

thanks

I'm no dev, but looking at logcat, it seems the 'skype on 3 beta' crashes when trying to write the 'skype service' contact to the phonebook.

it errors trying to write to contacts/people/(number)/extensions as far as i can tell through my basic understanding, is that writing in that method is not supported under anything later than 1.6. It has been replaced by a new method.

I hope either some dev can workout what to change or we'll have to wait until three let it escape/release it!!! As i've worked out how to take apart the apk but lost when it comes to smali.

Just to recap for any people reading this, and to the question above.

This is NOT a 'true' skype like app!! i.e. it only works when not using wifi as it doesn't transport voice over the data connection. It sets up a session then uses the voice connection to either receive from or dial a special telephone number that connects into skype.

This particular app is near enough useless to anyone who isn't on the 'three' network, as the dial-in number is one that 'three' let users of its network call for free. (please check your contact first).

If your using any other provider please either look at fring or nimbuzz for skype over the data connection (data costs maybe effected), or something like iskoot for voice dial-in type (beware the later type can endup costing you money via call charges).

BTW: the app is available on the market, listed as: 'skype on 3 beta'

Cheers
Matt

free skype call on 3 uk is unbeatable , it dials out local number to make skype call is more stable than voip call. (I think this works just like the verizon in us )

However, full version of skype on android is not necessary , because fring and nimbuzz can fully support the functions already .

Now, HTC desire has been released on 3 UK as well, so i think a new version of skype and messenger is coming soon :)

Hope the android developer can figure out how it works on the non-3handset , thank you so much.

@hktony

I'm struggling to understand why your quoting my post and basically saying the same thing, as i can't see a question or a disagreement, etc..... but I'll try to clarify the apps status a bit more.

"skype on 3 beta" does work on non-3 handsets, as in your example, three's desire is a unbranded and untouched htc handset not customized to the network (for more info see their blog). I currently run the app on a non-3 handset too. The issue is that the current version, IIRC 0.9.0.9 is NOT compatible with 2.1. Therefore either we need a dev to sort the incompatible parts (as in post #25) or we wait until 3 release their update, which will work on 3 and non-3 branded handsets. The only restriction of this app is that it'll only work when connected to the 3 network.

If your on another network you need as suggested in my previous post. i.e. skype lite, which is exactly the same but works on other networks (but not free as that's a 3 thing only).

Folks in the UK, try this.
Its the S on 3 app UK version 0.10.0.4. Should work on 2.1.
Hope they make an Irish version soon!

Can someone using this app in the UK do me a huge favour and perform the following in adb, please (only after you have successfully logged in to skype, as server details will be there):

#adb pull /data/data/com.skype.android.threeUK/shared_prefs/Skype.xml

and post the Skype.xml file???

I need to get this working on 3 ireland badly.

Are you sure the server details are there? as the files are identical bar two strings, one which is the contact address for the skype contact in my phone's phonebook, and one which is hashed somehow, to the naked eye, complete trash!! Any ideas how to decode it?

Could it be stored somewhere else?

Hang on, I thought it picked up the settings from the server depending on your location. What isn't happening when you try?

Has anybody managed to receive a skype call using this version?
I can make calls to other skype users, but when people try to call me on skype, they get told

I would be interested to know if anyone else has this problem, or whether it's just me.

Thanks,

I've managed to receive two calls through this app so far but only from one person on an Windows PC using the std skype client i'll get my missus to call me on her '3' skype phone later and test that.

I have occasionally had to dial out 2-3 times to skype when calling a skype user through it, i get a sort of service not active type of tone. I guess its that the 'data' part hadn't yet set up the session through skype, yet the phone was already trying to ring the dial in number.

Interesting! My only incoming call test so far has been from my missus using her PC with the std skype client. She tried calling me 3 times but kept getting "busy".
She wasn't interested enough to find her mobile to try using the (symbian version) 3uk skype client!

I'll try to do some proper testing tonight and see how it goes.

can you explain how what you mean by a modded iskoot on three in Ireland? I'm looking for any solution that works with android as Fring over WiFi is not really comparable to my old skype phone and I don't like to switch the sim anymore whenever I need to make an international call.

This mod is for 3irl only.

1. Download the SkypePreferences.txt file and change extension from .txt to .xml.
2. Right click and open file with Notepad or WordPad. Find strings:

and replace the stars with your actual Skype login password, username and your mobile number.
3. Save to your AndroidSDK/Tools folder.
4. Freshly install iskoot on your phone. Don't start the app yet.
5. adb push SkypePreferences to your phone with this command:
#adb push SkypePreferences.xml /data/data/com.iskoot.android/shared_prefs/SkypePreferences.xml
6. Start the app (It will take a while to sign in).Voila!

There's one minor issue with this: for some reason only the first received skype call routes through 3 servers (free call). Second and subsequent received calls are routed through iskoot servers, costing you skype credit. To avoid this just exit and restart the app everytime you have received 1 call. You can dial for free all you like.
Oh, you might need some skype credit for the app to work (it won't use it, though).

I'll try to do some proper testing tonight and see how it goes.

Sorry to quote myself, but in case anybody was wondering, everything seems to be working well on my Milestone.
The issue my wife had with not being able to call me from her laptop seems to have been a problem with her laptop (reboot and it works ok).

I have now made and received skype calls to and from both the std windows skype client and the 3UK skype client on Symbian and 3 Skype phones.

I'm really pleased to have this working. Thanks again to dawmuz and I hope you get it working in Ireland soon!

Thx

Hi, thank you so much for this,
I've been looking everywhere and this is the first working skype client I come across for the HTC desire on 3.

I tried to pull the xml file but I get a permission denied message,
let me know if there's any work around

hmm... thats strange!

Are you sure your in an area with a good signal and you have wifi turned off?

All i can think of (stab in the dark) are your APN settings correct as far as IIRC there is more than one way to set them up. And this caused an issue for MMS, so maybe as this app uses some of those details it could be a similar isuue?????

I have 2 lines in the APN's, 3 and 3MMS? as detailed somewhere else on this site.

If not that maybe a logcat would help us (EDIT: sorry, someone with more knowledge than me, but i'll try) sort it out for you.

Wifi is turned off. I tried this yesterday and got the error message but I thought it was down to a poor signal since I only had 1 bar. I'm at the office now with full reception and still get the same problem.

Re: APN settings, I also do have the 3 and 3MMS profiles as you mentioned. They look fine to me... anywhere I can confirm?

I'll look into logcat as I've never used it before and try get some logs!

Thanks:)

*edit: Found the problem. Mobile Network was off. I thought this didn't need to be connected to the internet since it's over 3's apn. My bad... sorry!

you will find the apk file inside the zip file

I tried unzipping it but it reveals a lot files none of which is an apk. I also renamed the zip to apk and tried to install using the package manager but the phone says it cannot find AndroidManifest.xml. looking in the zip it is definitely there. Would you mind sharing your steps with me? Maybe I missed something.

I changed my firefox user agent string to Samsung Spica/Portal and just downloaded it from planet 3. I did the same with a hero user agent and noticed that the versions were different - 0.9.0.9 & 0.10.0.4!

would you be willing to share how you did this? I tried a number of ways but it always redirects me to the www version of the three store instead of the intranet version of mobile.three.co.uk

I tried on my 3g Dongle using both my cell sim and broadband sim without success.

Is there a way to change the user agent to spoof other phones on android 2.1?

jkub

Aha, I just realized what happened. OSX automatically extracts the apk when I unzip the file. Totally masked what the issue was. I downloaded via Android, unzipped, and voila! Sorry for the confusion!

Does any one else find that when you sign into Skype, there is no way to quit the app while being able to auto-login next time round? I can only sign out and then go to my home page, but not actually exit Skype like I could on my 3 SE W995. If sign out, leaving the program running in the background, next time I want to login, be it after rebooting the phone or not, I have to reenter my details.

Leaving any sort of IM running in the background is a real battery killer. I'll maybe consider an app killer.

Greetings All,
Great Thread, finally found somewhere that chats about my favourite app, Been successfully using the 3 Skype app for two years now, first on my Nokia E66, and then on my Google/Nexus One, however I have just upgraded my phone to Google Android 2.2 Froyo and my 3 Mobile Skype app to version:

3UKSkype_0.10.0.12_hutch_live.apk

and now although the app software installs fine and starts to load, when you go to log in you get this messages,

The Application Skype on 3
(process com.skype.android.threeUK)
has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.

The app has worked fantastically well on my Nexus One to this point even better than on my Nokia, but not now.

I have also checked the error message from ddms and this is what it is saying:

I don't know if that clears it up any more, I am first to admit that this is all getting a little over my head but I am prepared to learn to get this great app back.

To this end I have written an E Mail to David Kerrigan the Internet Services Director at 3 Mobile, but in the mean time, have any of you chaps got any idea's how I can get around this prob and get my beloved and money saving Skype app running again,

Kind Regards and Best Wishes ~ Ashe.

Hi Ashe

Glad to hear you're still enjoying Skype, and once again many thanks for all the support with our previous and current promotions.

However, as Froyo is only just being released onto our devices, we have not yet updated and tested the app with Skype for 2.2 compatibility. We are of course working with Skype as we speak to make this happen as soon as is possible.

As ever, we would not recommend customers to upgrade their software to versions not tested by three if they wish to retain the applications we provide, however rest assured we should have this solved and re-released within a couple of weeks so sit tight chap, it won't be long :D

Best Wishes, Dave Kerrigan

to run skype on my unlocked Iphone 3G

If you meant the skype client for 3 it's unlikely that you wil get it to run on an apple device as this being an android (and wm) program. Also you cannot get iskoot as they just finished with the service as of 20/01/2011...

It's time to switch to android ;)

Yes I am talking about skype client, I already own Xperia X10 which is from Three UK. But my wife uses iphone 3G and she has 5000min Skype call allowance as she talks international over skype to skype. So whenver she calls over Skype then her normal call rates and if somebody calls her over skype then it uses her internet usage which is only 100mb for a month as she is using Pay As you go. somebody calls her over skype then it uses her internet usage

Hi,

the problem is that some people don't know the difference between
- Skype (being a native Skype client made and downloadable from Skype) and
- iSkoot (a 3rd party Skype client made by iSkoot and used by 3 in UK [and in other countries])

If you install Skype on your mobile device it will _always_ use your data allowance _unless_ you use wifi.
However if you install iSkoot then it will use your GSM minutes to call a pre-set number and your "normal GSM voice call" will then be translated to a "web-like Skype call" by a gateway.

Then it's get a bit more complicated as 3 uses a custom iSkoot client which is set to call a 3 gateway phone number (different in each country 3 operates) - and that's why this call is free of charge as they're not billing for calling that number.

So obviously, if you want to make "Skype calls" for free then you:
- buy a 3 SIM card and
- try to install an iSkoot client on your device.

Let's see the platforms

WinMo:
- no downloadable Skype client as Skype discontinued support for the OS, but you can install and use old versions from the internet
- no customised iSkoot client by 3
- there WAS an original iSkoot client which worked on 3 after you modified the registry and filled in their gateway details - but from 22/01/2011 iSkoot has been shut down so just as for the original Skype client you can only install the old version

Android:
- Skype client downloadable from Skype (Market)
- there WAS a customised working iSkoot client for 3 for earlier versions of Android but there is none for Froyo (AFAIK - PLEASE CORRECT ME WITH A LINK OF A WORKING CLIENT!!)**
- there was an original iSkoot client on the Market but as I told you iSkoot has been blablabla...

as far as iPhone concerned - I'm not really an apple guy and can't be bothered really but there is a Skype client supported by Skype, so that's why your wife using her data allowance as she uses the original Skype client from Skype...

She can
- use wifi when available
- get an iSkoot client modified for 3 (if it ever existed for apple)
- buy a cheap and small "3mobile" for her Skype calls - she doesn't even have to top the SIM up ever!

Hmmm, I think I've done a pretty good job explaining the differences in Skype and iSkoot (aka Skype on 3) :)

** Forget to mention that I've spoken to 3 Customer Service on last Sat - when I was thinking that I want to upgrade to a Desire HD, but I don't :) - and was told that "for Android devices Skype calls use your 2GB data allowance". When I asked what if I use a 3 client for Skype I got the reply: "if you know how to do it then it's free for you" :p

Hi,

the problem is that some people don't know the difference between
- Skype (being a native Skype client made and downloadable from Skype) and
- iSkoot (a 3rd party Skype client made by iSkoot and used by 3 in UK [and in other countries])

Thanks for ur reply...There is no point if she can use wifi coz she wants to use it on the move and because she is not able to use skype minutes on Iphone 3G so she is using her sim in Sony C902, there is no point to keep 2 phones with 2 different number doesnt make sense.
Lets see if I can get Iphone version for Iskoot if its available.

Same sw but you have to change the settings as the 1st post suggests.
Back in the Windows days I've seen the settings somewhere written down for all the other 3 covered countries but can't remember where.

But you can get my friend Google to help you ;)

Thanks, yes I had the old windows iskoot settings and the 3ireland browser certificate but they changed that system.
If someone could tell me how to either modify the UK apk or show me how to change the identifier on my phone to one that is available on 3ireland I would be very happy.
My fingers are numb from googling, can't find anything anywhere.

on all you can eat data package then there isn't any need.

I understood that voice quality is better as it uses voice network at no cost within Three UK network internally. We communicate to and from 3 servers using voice and then Three UK servers do data comunications with skype using data but I assume data communication by those servers is not limited by mobile bandwith so it is (in theory at least) the best solution.

Is there a way to stop the Skype on 3 app barring me from making national calls with my Skype credit? I just moved to 3 today on a 1 month data only contract and I'm heavily disappointed (not really surprised though TBH)

If I can't then this will probably be the shortest time I've been with a mobile network...

Just a guess, but I would have thought to do that you would need to install the normal skype app aswell and use the data connection with that app (therefore potentially losing call quality).

Mienaikage

I thought about doing that, although I have limited data so it's kind of frustrating to be told you can use Skype for free and then you get a popup that says "you can only call numbers that are outside your own country"

Is there is a way to get 3 servers numbers with extensions for each contact or something like that :)? Someone said here that they were 'circuit switched' rather than 'packet switched' this means a problem… +447838333602 is outgoing number. What do you think about porting .apk to WP7 is this possible?

I don't understand circuit and packet business but if you want to call phone numbers it works with international numbers only and if you pick them from the contacts list it offers to call them via skype using the credit on it. Maybe someone can hack it to skip the confirmation or allow national calls too as a separate option. Don't know if it is what you want but hope it helps.

The main idea is to make three servers numbers to work without Skype app on any three branded phone with 3 sim. As I understand skype app uses circuit switched algorithm, if so there is no way to get those numbers to work without official skype on 3 app. The number I've provided is a three server number for outgoing calls, yes international (and yes SkypeOut unlimited subscription plan is included). It's eather an circuit swich (three servers check back on Skype H3G app) or extension which is might be 4 digits for each of your contacts.. Closest thing I've found is AsPhone (http://www.xda-developers.com/android/asphone-skype-for-h3g-umts/) app created by a member of xda forums. This app is now blocked by Three (well done 3)

Hi geeks

Is it possible to install both version of skype on your Android phone and use them seperatly depending on connectivity ?

v1.Skype for 3 used as normal over 3uk sim unblocked phone
(if I understand correctly, this version only work on 2G or 3G , not via wifi?)

v2.skype for android used to connect on skype via wifi connection when you are abroad or in a near to zero 3uk network coverage zone?

if yes , is the same rule apply to windows messenger installations?

Do you think that you get better battery life using skype/live messenger for 3 version running constantly in the back ground compare to a wifi connection?

Many thanks
