View Full Version : [TIP] How to make Opera Mobile 10 the default browser

After spending several hours messing around with the /Windows/OperaL.exe file to no avail, I finally figured out how to make the new Opera Mobile 10 the default browser, so that bookmarks launched from Manila's Internet tab will open there and not in Opera 9.x. It's actually very easy.

First, copy the entire contents of the /Program Files/Opera Mobile 10 folder into the /Windows folder. It's important to copy more than just the .exe file, otherwise the program won't launch.

Next, use a registry editor to change
/HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\OperaL.exe"
to
/HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

Finally, soft reset and you should be all set. There are probably other ways of doing this; please share any other methods you may know.

Update: this method doesn't seem to be working for everyone; suggest you read the entire thread, as Dsixda has kindly posted a CAB which makes multiple registry changes. Also, see posts #2 and 3 for an alternate method that has worked for some.

I have not tried this my self but couldn't you just change the registry to /HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\Opera Mobile 1-\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

I think you mean /Program Files instead of /Windows, and it's a good point -- I didn't even try that. Guess I'm just used to always having my main Opera.exe in the Windows folder.

Well, this didn't work for some reason (yes, I corrected the path to Program Files). HTC Touch Pro (CDMA).

It worked fine for me. I set it to "\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe" and it worked perfectly. Both Launch Browser and the favorite icons worked. For reference, I am on a Touch Pro with Manila 2.5.

I installed Opera 10 Beta to my storage card (omnia i910). any thoughts on how to properly reference a storage card from the registry? I've tried:

"\My Storage\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

&

"\\My Storage\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

&

"My Storage\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

None work. Any thoughts?

I should add that Opera 10 did take over most of my handlers/file types, but did take over whichever one is responsible for the "Internet" button in TouchFlo 3D.

/HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\OperaL.exe"
to
/HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

:D

The essential component.

I found opera 10 had already changed this entry!!

Works if you click launch browser and search but not for favourites. I've just added my fav's to opera's tiles. What an awesome browser though!

..autorotation how?

There's a cab file for this particular problem: take a look (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4991493&postcount=3715).

Hopefully someone can help me making Opera Mobile 10 Beta the default browser in the manila internet tab. The solutions posted here don't work for me, because it keeps telling me that the program is not signed with a trustet certificate. I had this issue with Opera 9 before but found a workaround which worked fine. Doesn't work for Opera 10 though. Any ideas?

On my device (Kaiser, WM 6.5.1 23053), Opera 10 changed that setting for me after installing (on SD) and it works.

Hi there,

I'm trying to use this with UC_Setup. Somehow it doesn't work. here's my opera.xml file:

<wap-provisioningdoc>
<characteristic type="Registry">
<characteristic type="HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:DEFBROWSER" />
<parm name="0" datatype="string" value="Opera Browser" />
<parm name="1" datatype="string" value=""\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"" />
</characteristic>
</characteristic>
</wap-provisioningdoc>

I also tried the name="1" line with:

<parm name="1" datatype="string" value='"\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"' />

Also no success. Can someone help me?

There may be another way to escape the double quotes.

I have attached a CAB file in case you need it.

What does not work ? the UC_Setup or the default browser ?
There may be another way to escape the double quotes.

The UC Setup works. I use it for exchange, regional settings and other stuff.

The problem is that it just won't set the registry keys. Maybe it's due to the double qoutes, maybe because of the : in the key name.

As far as I can see the format is right.

Hello all :) I had posted help on this originally on another forum to try and get the TF3d Internet Icon and bookmarks below it to load up using Opera10.... and then surfing the web found this thread.... I am using HTC Touch Pro sprint(cdma) no cooked roms just stock phone. #2 on my list is the way mentioned in the first post

ok tried a few new things...

#1: (Not copying it to windows folder)
use your favorite reg edit software and change the entry below
Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/EFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\OperaL.exe"
to
Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/EFBROWSER/1/"\Storage Card\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

Well when I went to it.... it was already the second one anyways... everything I open that needs the web opens the new Opera 10 anyways... only thing that does not work is clicking the world icon in the tf3d internet tab or any of the links underneath it...

#2 Installed all the files into \Windows\ where the original Opera9 was and then clicked on the TP3d WOrld Icon and the bookmarks... just sits there never executes anything... must still be looking for operaL.exe.... PS. also in the registry is Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/EFBROWSER/1/"\Windows\Opera10-armv4i.exe"

#3:
I renamed Opera10-armv4i exe to OperaL exe and brought along all the files Opera 10 has in it's installation folder to \Windows\ where the original opera9 was

It then does kick off from TF3d when I click on the World icon or any of the bookmarks but then crashes and does not start up ... sits at the OperaMobile screen with the loading blue bar and is just a few ticks from the end.

anyone else have any luck yet on getting this to work on HTC Touch pro sprint(cdma)....

Thanks

The same like me. I'm using Diamond Touch 6.1 I've changed all the registries required then reboot the phone. It's still open Opera 9.5 instead when I push to the browser icon in TF3D. I installed Opera10 on Storage.

You must change "27c65cbd_manila" in windows folder with text editor after TouchFlo3D is disabled. It worked for me, except I receive message "localhost not found".

This works. The problems is with tabs "All bookmarks" and "Browser".
I receive the following message in opera:
file://localhost/Bookmarks unavailable
file://localhost/home unavailable

Any advices please?

You must change "27c65cbd_manila" in windows folder with text editor after TouchFlo3D is disabled. It worked for me, except I receive message "localhost not found".

I edited the file as mentioned above and the TF3D still loads Opera 9 instead of 10. Using HTC TP2 T7379 GSM with TF3D v3.0 (build 1914.3222) on Telus network.
I'm guessing this issue will not get resolved any time soon. So many fixes and none work.

I have attached a CAB file in case you need it.

Here is your cab, for those opera mobile installed on "storage card".

I tested it for myself: opera mobile 10 beta 2 installed on storage card, called successfuly from rss hub.
Don't work before, work after. So hopefully, it should have done something good :°)

Easiest way I found was to uninstall Opera 10 and also delete the profile folder then reinstall and it asks if you wish to set as default browser? Select yes and that has it set as default without having to change the registry entries:)

I have a different issue altogether. I primarily use Opera Mini 4.2, but every so often, Mini needs to load a standard browser to load something (like zooming in on an image). For some reason it always tries to load the old version of Opera even though I have 10 installed as default. Any ideas?

Have you tried the cab file in this thread? It sets all the default browser settings to Opera 10. It should work for when Mini launches a browser.

This worked for me on my TMOUS TP2, though I cooked Opera 10 into my ROM before loading it, and setting that registry key made it default.

EDIT: The line quoted below with "DEFBROWSER" in it has a space after the D, due to the formatting limitations of this site for long words. Just take out the space.

Will this cab work on a Fuze running 10 beta 2u? What exactly does these regedits do?

Hello all.

When I installed Opera 10 beta 2u it asked for would you like for 10 to be default which I did, I also installed Dsixda cab.

But on my new Verizon TP2 this did not make everything default.

Mostly what I care about really anyway is the main Browser shortcut from the TF3D's browser tab page as well as the "More Detail Online" option for the Weather page.

Both of those still use the original Opera which I would have to assume are probably due to reg links specific to those?

At any rate if any one finds how to get those to switch to Opera 10, please reply.

Thanks

To get Touch Flo to use Opera as default:
HKCU/Software/HTC/Manila Value Name:DefaultBrowserIsIE Value Data: 0
Default is 1.

Now when you use one of the shortcuts in the Internet Tab, the Opera Browser will be used.

Now when you use one of the shortcuts in the Internet Tab, the Opera Browser will be used.I looked for this on my stock OS TP2 and first, it wasn't even there. So I thought maybe it might have been as I never had IE for a default browser so I added it as a D Value and made it 0 but still the default Opera was used, then changed it to 1 and still the same.

Not to be a smart axx but just to point out if this was missed, the issue here is not getting Opera over IE to be the default but to get Opera "10" over the supplied Opera as the default.

Ok.
I have the TMO TP2. Running the cdguider_TMOUS_Shipped_Rom_1.20.531.4 ROM.
After loading the ROM, I went into Opera 9 and got into opera:config and made the change in the install section. Then I loaded up Opera 10 beta 2 and selected to make it the default.
I then ran Opera_Mobile_10_reg.cab.
Once that was complete, I made the reg edit I indicated above.
For me, now Opera 10 is the default browser for Touch flow hyperlinks and for hyper links in e-mails.

I also made the following changes in InternetPortal-en-us.xml, in Application Data/Manilla:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>

Hello mmeyer4663

I have tried all above aside from the changes in the xml file but again no go.

This is what I have in my InternetPortal-en-us.xml file

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
<InternetPortal>
<IncludeUserFavorites>True</IncludeUserFavorites>
<Banner
DefaultImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner.q tc"
SelectedImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner_s elected.qtc"
Text="Launch Browser"
Width="480"
Height="215" />
<OperatorLinks>

</OperatorLinks>
</InternetPortal>

So probably a lot of the other stuff in yours is for things that are not on mine. So should I just make it like this?

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-16"?>
<InternetPortal>
<BrowserExe>\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe</BrowserExe>
<IncludeUserFavorites>True</IncludeUserFavorites>
<Banner
DefaultImagePath="\Windows\HTC\Assets\Images\InternetPortal\banner.q tc"

Text="Launch Browser"
Width="480"
Height="215" />
<OperatorLinks>

</OperatorLinks>
</InternetPortal>

As well to do this can it be done correctly by copying the file to my PC's desktop, then changing the xml extension to txt, then make it like above and save it then change the extension back to xml and copy it into my manila folder on the HH?

Thanks

I restarted the device and still from the internet browser tab of TF3d it starts Opera9

Just to note, although I didn't check it before, it does open Opera 10 from a e-mail link.

At any rate I think this must be some where in the Verizon's TF3D's browser programs stuff as everything else does it.

Hopefully someone will find the answer.

This may be an obvious question but, did you install Opera 10 on your device or on your storage card? I installed Opera 10 on my device.

I installed in on my device, actually I don't even have a card yet.

I tell ya, I could be wrong but I'm really thinking this must be something that is hard coded into the Verizon Launcher programs.

Last night I spent hours going over the registry searching for OperaL, Opera9 and even just Opera and I couldn't find anything that either wasn't already changed, or was completely irrelevant, at least as far as I could tell.

The only thing I wondered about was that there were a few entries in the Task Manger thing which I left as they were all zero'ed from what I'm thinking is as a result of a memory saving cab I installed.

An yes I installed Opera 10 before I installed the cab.

So, so far everything else I know will open Opera 10 but my TF3D Browser tab and Weather Tab if I click on the "more info" will not, which ironically are the very two I would want more then anything.

Sounds like there is quite a difference between TMO and Verz version.

In response to dsixda's post with the reg fixes to make the browser default again, it didn't work for me.. as Opera was cooked into the ROM I'm using and there was no Opera folder in the "Program Files" folder either on the device itself or the sd card, so I used his cab file and it didn't work quite for me, because his reg entries point to "\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\" I've recompiled a new cab file with the needed Registry fixes to point to "\Windows\"

Have fun everyone.

P.S. Also attached registry file (rename it to xxx.reg) in case you don't want to install a cab file (you can import it), you should replace the directory path to point to whichever folder "Opera10-armv4i.exe" is located in.

Reading through this post, it's pretty clear that different people/ROMs/setups have differnt problems.

In my case (using EnergyROM_21885_RAPHAEL_24.Dec.2009_Standard):

(1) After installing and launching Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2u, it asked whether I wanted it to be the default browser. I replied "yes", and now Opera 10 opens when clicking links anywhere (e.g. in email) and also when clicking "Launch Browser" from the Internet tab.

(2) I changed \Windows\27c65cbd_manila so that clicking the Opera icon in the Internet tab will launch Opera 10, as well as clicking bookmarks inside the Bookmarks page that is accessed from the Internet tab.

(3) What I'm missing are functional Push Pages. Clicking push page icons in the Internet tab launches the old Opera 9.

I assume there is another registry setting or file (most probably) that needs to be changed. Any ideas will be welcome.

Hey guys just thought I would make a post that I finally was able to get Opera10 as my default for the TF3D internet tab.

So along with, installing it and replying yes to the default thing and using the Make it the default cab here on this tread, and with adding the proper lines in InternetPortal-en-US.xml, what I found finally did it was to set the parameter, Internet.SetOperaForeground found at HKCU\Software\HTC\Manila from 1 to 0.

After that I get Opera10 from that tab, as well too all the parameters in InternetPortal-en-US.xml like the default start page are all working now!

Good stuff.

So far the only thing that won't start in Opera10 is the More Detail Online>> thing on the Weather page.

At any rate just thought would post about that one and btw if anyone knows how to remove those 4 add a push page options and the search banner box from that tab please let me know.

Content of /HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/:DEFBROWSER
0 = Opera Browser
1 = "\Storage Card\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe"
2 = 1
3 = 0

I am on a diamond with wm 6.5 and I installed the Opera 10 B3 Repack (No Prompts/Flash Lite/Rotation/More) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=1458
Apparently the cab also makes it your default browser after install, however this is not working. When opening a link from RSSHub I get a error saying the html file cannot be openend.
I have tried all the suggestions, also corrected the path to lead to "\InternalStorage\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe" (yes, InternalStorage is one word on my ROM on the diamond...)

I also dont use TouchFlo, only need it to simply open links from RSSHub.
Apart from that, the browser works perfectly.

Any suggestions? is there something "special" on the diamond, other reg settings to alter?

Thanks,
Geen

UPDATE: I just installed on device, worked "out the box" as it should... Seems like it is not possible (at least not for me...) to have it installed on the Internal Storage of the diamond... will keep trying

Hi,

I installed the Opera 10 B3 Repack (No Prompts/Flash Lite/Rotation/More) from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...postcount=1458 on my Touch HD (german stock rom) first on the storage card and then in main memory. But none of it makes it the default browser.

I tried "JZ SmartMort" http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=382043 but it didn't find my opera mobil 10 on the storage card too.

Is there a way or cab to set it as default browser for german rom on storage card?

after mucking around with all these reg hacks... i gave up.

FIX:
1. Download and reinstall the application to the same location it was installed before.
2. At the end, it will prompt you asking to set as default browser. Select YES.

Don't worry, your settings and bookmarks are untouched. no reboots required after...

EDIT: The line quoted below with "DEFBROWSER" in it has a space after the D, due to the formatting limitations of this site for long words. Just take out the space.

Hi!

And THANKS for this, my problem with the new Opera 10 (Ninja Duck's version) was not to make it the default browser, it was to get the URL's from within a mail to open Opera 10 and this reg tweak did it for me. :) I'm so happy! :)

Just a couple of questions since i can't use your cab since i use a Swedish device with Program instead of Program Files.

Can i just copy and paste your reg listing here into a text file, change the path to mine and rename it to .reg and import it into my device? If i mind the space after the D EFBROWSER of course :)

If so, just ONE more question:

Since i have installed on my SD Card (Minneskort in Swedish), must i enter this path somewhere? If so where and how?

@="\"\\Program\\Opera Mobile 10\\Opera10-armv4i.exe\" %1"
"backup"="iexplore.exe %1"

Should it be:

@="\"\Minneskort\Program\\Opera Mobile 10\\Opera10-armv4i.exe\" %1"
"backup"="iexplore.exe %1"

Or is'nt necessary?

I'm not THAT good at this :)

Thanks again! Now i can use my e-mail links! :)

I have taken the reg fix from this thread and edited it so it fits my Swedish device with Program path instead of Program Files. Now when i try to import it it won't import or at least it does not change the values. :)

What format must a .reg file be saved in?

yeah, it depends on where opera was installed.
search "oper*.exe" within the \windows or \Program files directory, or even the storage card to locate it.
Then change the value of reg key mentioned above to the oper*.exe's full path, use "" if there is space within the path.

for me , its "\program files\opera mobile 10\opera10-armv4i.exe"

Here is your cab, for those opera mobile installed on "storage card".

I tested it for myself: opera mobile 10 beta 2 installed on storage card, called successfuly from rss hub.
Don't work before, work after. So hopefully, it should have done something good :°)

This works on my HTC HD2.

Thanks

It worked fine for me. I set it to "\Program Files\Opera Mobile 10\Opera10-armv4i.exe" and it worked perfectly. Both Launch Browser and the favorite icons worked. For reference, I am on a Touch Pro with Manila 2.5.

do you need to add " "

I have TMobile and i have the same exact problem. I cannot get Opera 10 to launch from the Internet tab. It launches Opera 9. Opera 10 IS the default browser

:)Hey guys just thought I would make a post that I finally was able to get Opera10 as my default for the TF3D internet tab.

Thanks.

BINGO!!! Thank you!

I have the AT&T Tilt 2, stock ROM. My problem is the push page links on the Internet tab. I have everything opening with Opera Mobile 10 including the search box and the "launch web browser" globe on the Internet tab. When I use the "add a new push page" links, after adding a url to them and clicking on the push page link, Opera 9 opens instead of Opera Mobile 10. I have tried nearly every solution on this site that I have been able to find and a few solutions on other sites but none of them work to open Opera Mobile 10 when the push page links are used.

hi, I've tried multiple suggestions from this thread and nothing seems to work for me. could somebody point me in the right direction? I've got HTC HD with what I think is the following ROM - 1.56.405.1 (43972) WWE

I've just reinstalled my Opera 10 and replied YES to the question about the default browser. I've also checked the register and saw that the path in /HKLM/ was set to /HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Rai/EFBROWSER/1/"\Program Files\Opera10-armv4i.exe". I've tried changing it to Windows (copying Opera folder first), I've also tried both of the cabs in this thread - nothing seems to work. Any advice would be very much appreciated, thanks

For all the people, who are still struggling to change your default browser to your choice, please google for 'fureteur4ppc', Out of the box, this program has most of the typical browsers to choose from, so that you can set them as default browser or you can paste the browser EXE file link, so that it will be set as default Browser.

The only draw back is, this software is not in English.

To setup custom browser as a default browser, launch the application and do the following.
1. Click on 'Tests blah blah' button, to check the installed browsers.
2.Click on the button saying 'Mon Choix' and enter your browser exe file path.
3. After that, click on 'Valider' button, to check the accuracy of the file path.

That should do the job. Soft Reset and test the default browser..

Below are the values that are set by Opera Mobile 10 in the registry... I cooked them into my ROM and they work (I'm using a Touch HD with mostly Diamond2 OEMs).

I have attached a CAB file in case you need it.

For Diamond users with Opera Mobile 10 installed to their Internal Storage, I've edited dsixda's registry edits cab. All credit goes to dsixda for doing the heavy lifting. I just did a quick rearch and replace, then repackaged the xml file into a new CAB.

I tried altering the registry on my HTC Touch HD, but still couldn't change the default browser..

Changing the target in "InternetPortal-en-US.xml” which is located in \Application Data\Manila
DID work !

I found a guide here:

I have installed Opera Mobile 10 on my AT&T Tilt 2 after resisting for too long because I liked using Opera Mini 5 and really didn't like Opera 9 that came preinstalled. Anyways, it works as the default browser for my phone, but is getting an error for a friend's VZN TP2. It is working as the default browser on the TP2, but gives the error

file://localhost/home unavailable.

Is there a fix for that error?

My Diamond2 came with Opera 9.5 as default browser. One of my friends deleted it by mistake in the program files, so I installed Opera 10 and set it up as default browser but now not even Opera 9.5 opens when i click on the Launch Browser in the manila it does not work, it stays for a couple of seconds with the HTC icon and Loading...
I have tried everything in this posts (using the cabs for the registry, editing the 27c65cbd_manila file with no luck.

Any ideas...

Thanking in advanced

Can confirm confirm - this is the best solution for HTC HD2 with Opera installed on SD Card - install this cab and the job is done.

Thank you!

If you want to set opera 10 as default browser you have to change tree regsitry keys to the opera 10.exe

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\:D EFBROWSER]
