There's a lot of discussion about docks for the Nexus One. Since budget is a big issue for a lot of us, why don't we resort to DIY solutions?
Please share your ideas in making a Nexus One DIY dock.

Before breaking out the duct tape you might want to have a look at the 3rd party cradles on ebay.
Another option is the one dollar docking station (http://www.androidhackz.net/2010/02/docking-station-for-a-buck/) :D

Good thing the Clock app works on landscape :D
I think, the cradle mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627552 would also work nicely. Good thing we have those in the Philippines. I just hope it's safe for the Nexus One.
Thanks for the ebay tip. Found a lot of options :)

I've been waiting for alternate docks too.
I don't need the bluetooth or RCA connectors, just a stand with pins to charge the n1. (via the pins, not micro usb)
can someone with a dock post some pictures of the dock pins, if they can volt-test the pins that would be great.

The ebay knockoffs use microUSB, just like the lego dock :) As far as I know there are no pin-utilizing ones apart from the official one. Too bad I already have bluetooth speakers :-)

Absolutely agree. Sadly, I bet we won't ever see one. I'm guessing it's much cheaper just to mold a piece of plastic around a micro-usb plug than to actually match the pin setup. I'm guessing that's why we saw them appear so quickly after launch.
Hope I'm proven wrong, though. That Nexus dock is hella expensive, and apparently kind of buggy.

Thanks. I'm thinking we can build one of these out of plastic/putty/clay/plaster of paris etc.
Cut up a usb cable and connect the +5v and GND to to simple pins/nails (blunted/filed) at the bottom. ( with a little soldering).

about the 3 pins
if you see from the bottom you have 3 pins, 2 on the left, 1 on the right from the micro usb.
if you haven't attached the microusb you have the following:
pin 1 <-> pin 2: -2.5 volts
pin 2 <-> pin 3: +2.6 volts
pin 1 <-> pin 3: 0 volts
when you have attached the micro usb you get
pin 1 <-> pin 2: 2 volts
pin 2 <-> pin 3: 2.6 volts
pin 1 <-> pin 3: 4.6 volts (with the stock loader I get 5 volts)
so I assume the outer pins are for charching (5 volts = usb power).
Can someone with the stock docking verify this?
Does anyone know what the purpose for the other pin? It should detect the dock mode? There is no 4th pin for the car dock...

The sneaker dock works well since the shoelaces keep the audio and usb cables tidy. It just takes up a ridiculous amount of space... unless you have tiny feet.

It always makes me laugh that people who can afford expensive phones like this one, can't (or are too cheap) to actually buy a dock.
You shouldn't spend your last money on a phone :D
And the cheapest micro-usb dock costs less than 20 bucks on DX, buy and hack it.
Anyways, about the pins: I don't have the official dock (too expensive to ship to Finland) so I can't verify any of this, but I'm guessing that the dock function via the pins isn't such a simple job of just connecting some power to them.
There are 3 pins, you should be able to charge it via the 1+3 pins, but for the dock detection (going automatically to the clock and hiding the charging LED), the middle pin must most likely actually do something.
The desktop and car docks are both going to use the middle pin to possibly send some data to the phone to identify the dock.
So in a worst case only charging it or hooking up some resistor in the middle pin might not be your detection solution, some reverse engineering might be needed.
Let's hope I'm wrong. Can't wait to get some info on this.
If somebody actually owns a dock: please try blocking the middle pin with something like tape and see how the behavior changes. And while at it, take some readings out of the pins ;)

You shouldn't spend your last money on a phone :DWell this is a phone for tech savvy folks... and these people are usually smart enough to know the value of things and manage their finances well.
As for me, I waited three years for a phone with the specs I wanted so spending $530 was well worth it. $50 for the official dock is only worth it if you use it fully (connect it to your home speakers). All I need is a stand+charger.

Well, I understand not wanting to buy the original one as the (kind of) unnecessary bluetooth inclusion made it too expensive.
I'm all about DIY, but when people are using toilet paper rolls instead of a dock that costs $18.90 (with worldwide shipping. I spend more on food per day here in Finland), so meh :)
sku.34205 on Dealextreme.
I might actually buy one and hack it to work with pins (if it's even possible).

Lahdekorpi,
I have the official dock and played around with the pins a bit when I first got it (and unfortunately haven't had any free time to play with it more recently). I have so far only been able to get it to charge, but not go into dock mode automatically.
You can read more in my post in the dock pinout thread, but applying 5V on the outer pins seems to charge just fine. The dock measures 10kohm between the middle pin and ground, but a simple resistor won't replicate the dock detection. I consider it likely (although unfortunate) that there is some sort of signaling on the middle pin to enable the dock mode. The good news is that you can at least charge the phone without problem using the pins (it also charges fine with the middle pin on the dock taped up).
That said, the pins/contact are pretty tiny and it has proven to be pretty tricky to make a dock with pins that consistently and reliably align with the contacts on the phone. I made a decent looking dock out of $2US worth of oven-hardened black clay. It's about 30% reliable in starting a charge, but usually takes some wiggling to get lined up correctly.

Oh, the reason why I added an additional paper clip: I can now stand the phone Vertically on it. I would have preferred to wrap the spirals all the way to the top, but unfortunately, there aren't UBER long paper clips.

With the new Launcher2 (MOD, needs root) the screen rotates in any direction (360°) which helps if you have a DIY dock.

The Nexus is light wider than the dock in portrait. I'm going to try scale up the print when I get some better card.
I just whipped this together and it certainly holds the phone well enough. However the base isn't tall enough to accommodate our micro usb patch cables, so adding some size there would be wise.

I'm planning on creating my own dock for a green engineering project for school. My plan is to use the box and incorporate two small speakers. I know that the 3.5mm port on the phone has 4 poles one extra for the playback controls on the headphones, is there anyway I could use this and create my own buttons for controlling playback?
Also don't the pins on the phone have audio as well since there is an RCA output on the official dock. I would like to just have to deal with the pins and not the micro USB and 3.5mm.

Unfortunately - the audio coming from the 3.5mm jack is streamed through the Bluetooth Audio adapter built into the dock. I remember viewing some reviews from YouTube - you have to pair the phone with the dock - not sure if it automatically connects when you place the phone onto the dock, but the pins are only for charging and instructing the phone to switch to the desktop clock app.

I'm really hoping someone can figure out how to get the phone to go to the clock like the Google dock does. I'd really like to make a dock like that that I can use with a full case without having to remove the case. Or I may get brave and buy the Google dock and tear it apart and refashion it into a dock that will work with a case. I just don't care about the BT/audio part, so I have a hard time justifying buy something that has more than I need.

There are tones of post in this same forum section with links to cases, docks, batteries and stuff. Just look around and you'll find the stuff.

The paperclip version is by far the easiest to do while being bored at the office listening to pandora. :D I made up two in just a few minutes so I can tote one back to my desk at home and 90% of the offices should have your standard jumbo paperclip. The included pdf template to mark off the bend points was the best and made it that much easier.
I have the official dock back at the house on my nightstand and I'll try and look at what the 3 pins actually do. I have to wonder if the BT part is what signals the phone to switch to clock/car as both official docks have some sort of BT device that pairs to phone. I'm very tempted to get the car dock as it looks pretty killer, I just have an old generic with side clamps in the truck now and at least it can twist sideways for the proper "look."

something that can redirect the sound forward would help when using the built in crummy speaker.

No one makes any. Especially stuff. This whole accessories section of the forum is full of people who are full of crap.

I might actually buy one and hack it to work with pins (if it's even possible).
as a former exchange student in turku (finland), i can verify that food is quite expensive there. I wonder if you already got the charger to work with the pins instead of micro usb :)

I want to build a dock the utilizes the gold pin outs on the bottom.
Does anyone know what order they're in?
Google needs to slash their dock prices in half. They're too damn expensive as is.
edit: n/m, helps if I read the thread first
