Xdandroid (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711692") port for XPERIA
I am working to port the main Android distribution for HTC devices, xdandroid (http://www.xdandroid.com) to the XPERIA. The fix for the screen flip is now present in their source repository and hopefully the kernels will merge soon.
LATEST RELEASE: 27th September - mic mute fix
Fixes the mute mic in calls. Turns out I pulled the latest kernel sources at the wrong time :o
Complete package (http://cdn.bionicmessage.net/xperia-xdandroid-20101027.7z) (72MiB)
Without system.ext2 (http://cdn.bionicmessage.net/xperia-xdandroid-nosystem-20101027.7z) (27MiB)
Thanks to Jonny4911 for the touchscreen calibration file (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8318072&postcount=1490)
Known issues: Battery charging won't work if charger is not active at boot.
22nd September - kernel revision (page 147 onwards (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8263701&postcount=1447))
I am no longer distributing the system image as I no longer need to modify it.
* Get the kernel+haret etc. from here (http://cdn.bionicmessage.net/xperia-xdandroid-kernel-20100922.7z) and then get the latest XDANDROID system image from the official thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711692)
* Rename the system image you downloaded to system.ext2 and put it on your sdcard along with the kernel package
* As noted in the xdandroid thread, you will need to throw out your data.img this time around, due to having a signed release.
Changes:
Seems to crash less! :)
Known issue: Voice calls are not working properly (mic not turned on)
21st August - Kernel update (page 117 onwards (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709632&page=117))
Kernel from kovsky-battery-driver branch (http://gitorious.org/~mcbridematt/linux-on-qualcomm-s-msm/kovsky-battery-driver) - standalone battery meter driver, migrated to official HTC touchscreen driver, BT turns on but may not work, kb backlight thanks to ultrashot+vdelf
Clean system image from xdandroid 19/8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711692) There is no LauncherPro in this image!
Known bugs: Not as stable.
Important: delete ts-calibration on your SDcard. You will be asked to calibrate the touchscreen on startup. Follow the onscreen instructions and not the squares as the calibration program does not know the screen is upside down
Important: Back up your data.img as there is a very real chance you could lose it due to crash
Download: US West (http://cdn.bionicmessage.net/xperia-xdandroid-20100821.7z)
US East (http://www.an9elus.com/x1_xdandroid/xperia-xdandroid-20100821.7z)
with working ts-calibration and haret.exe (oops) (http://rapidshare.com/files/414336444/xperia-xdandroid-20100821.7z.html) thanks loco
Next release will be near the end of September, mkay? I've been busy elsewhere
9th August - System image update page 103 onwards (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709632&page=103)
Based on xdandroid RC2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711692)
Removed Gallery3D and Music Mod, replaced with 2D Gallery and stock Music. (You can d/l Music Mod without screen size issues from the Market)
Wireless tether now included (warning: burns more power than charger puts in)
powertop now included for power usage debugging
sdcard powersave fix now in default.txt
fsck files purged on startup.
Previous releases are available from this page (http://mcbridematt.dhs.org/mobile/index.php?title=Archived_Android_releases).
FAQs
Is there a Chinese language version?
Not yet. xdandroid has not built their images for non-latin locales it seems
Will there be a ROM?
Not yet. Requires more work for the kernel and that is not my area.
Will battery life be 'fixed'?
Possibly.
Will Camera be fixed?
Unlikely.
Charging does not work
If your phone is very warm then it is probably consuming more power than the charger delivers. Otherwise, reboot and try again
Market does not connect
Reboot, connect WiFi immediately (if you have it), try again
<Android feature X> does not work
Look in the Rapahael, Blackstone and Diamond forums to see if this issue affects other devices first. It is a very low priority for me.
If it involves Google accounts (i.e sync) I won't investigate.. we are lucky it works in the first place.
Speaker still seems to be on
Fixed in development, but I haven't released an updated kernel yet.
<I have a power saving idea involving speakers, GPS or something>
The cause of our battery life crapness is some driver bugs preventing the use of a proper sleep mode. Nothing else.

From doing the Gentoo work with X and now Android, I think a proper graphics driver might help, you can see that while the CPU isn't being taxed much there is low fps on the display.
If we can get that extra 56MB of RAM currently not available that would help as well. Android is very RAM hungry..

Wow that's cool somebody is working on this:D, and what about a 128mb swap partion to make up for for 56mb of ram currently not available? Also for graphic driver what do you mean exactly? Graphic driver for Android on xperia or do you need one from windows to port into android? I have a collection of graphic driver's that I use for the Xperia.

I tried using swap on my other Linux experiment but these days Linux seems to prefer not to use swap at all.
Android uses the Linux framebuffer to draw stuff, and there is a binary 3D driver for OpenGL stuff - i think the xdandroid guys use it and run the Nexus One gallery 3d app with it.
The issue is that the speed of drawing on the screen is very choppy, its like when you use Windows or Linux with a generic VESA driver - you can't see windows while your moving them, or if you do its very slow. Maybe its something to do with the vsync messages I get in dmesg.. I'll let someone more experienced answer :p

Could this be reason why android takes so much cpu power and battery?
i.e. if you take out the battery in winmo while connected to the charger you'll still be able to do everything on the phone.
I've done the same thing in android. Pull out the battery... but when I slide the homescreen the phone turns off.
So this is also a benefit for the most important thing.. improving battery life?

USB has always worked - but you need to have a USB cable plugged in and connected to a computer before starting HaRET. Its one of those things they don't fully know how to do under Linux yet.
It got me too when I was first playing around with Linux on the Xperia :(

As for progress, couldn't get wifi working today, the driver didn't detect the chipset (or rather the sdio slot) so hit a wall  Maybe there is something I don't know about. I think I'll attack the 3G radio instead..
The xdandroid folks haven't got much further either, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6955467&postcount=8793

.. may help you, re: 3G and/or WiFi (inspired by your 1:30am log)
In the forums, others had found that, in order for Wi-Fi to work on Android, need to enable it in WinMobile before using HaRET and starting Android.
For me, Wi-Fi didn't have to 'pre-enabled'; could go from OFF to ON, and worked OK. Also note that 3G worked out-of-the-box (albeit a slight delay before finding the 3G data signal); voice calls works right away.
Notes:
1) once Wi-Fi enabled, turning it OFF via "Settings.. Wireless & Networks.. Wi-Fi" caused Android to crash (well, reboot).. NOTE: before crashing, 3G connectivity is lost as well (at least, "3G" symbol disappears)
2) once Wi-Fi enabled, turning it OFF via "Settings.. Wireless.. Airplane Mode",
Wi-Fi (and 3G, too, of course) turn off; turn off Airplane mode, and WHILE Wi-Fi is turning back on, can disable it *and Android does NOT crash*; Wi-Fi can then be re-enabled and work OK
3) once rebooted from above, Wi-Fi is already on; 3G is NOT on initially.
*can* disable Wi-Fi, and Android did NOT crash. Eventually, 3G data indicator turns on, and tests OK; can also make voice calls
4) try re-enabling Wi-Fi: works, connects to access point
5) can disable Wi-Fi.. can enable/disable, seems NOT to crash.. wow, never got this far before
6) I had intended to put this after 2), but 3) and 4) are new results today =D
'this' is (from memory; sorry, don't want to 'jinx' my phone's state.. unless requested, want to try and preserve).
'this' is that, if the airplane mode trick is used, VOICE calls would never connect properly until.. reboot? re-enable WiFi? sorry, i forget.. the key point is (I think) that turning Wi-Fi on/off on its own, vs via Airplane Mode, *seemed* to cause different actions.. maybe compare logs/etc and see *what* that diff is?
Thanks for working on FroYo on X1!!

I put my hope into this project and Tremere. The idea of documenting all steps needed for modification standard release is a very good base for the future.
Other developers could participate in this project or share these basic X1 tweaks as a base for their own projects. Very promising, my respect goes to Tremere for all his effort.

My plan is to port xdandroid's work to the Xperia so we can share the work with the other HTC phones and we don't get left in the dark. Then I'll reverse engineer everything they did so people can port Froyo and future releases (i.e 2.3) on their own.

yea the xdandroid devs are GLADLY willing to work with xperia devs seeing as how xperia is a bunch of htc devices put together and they did support kovsky in the start so its in their kernel.
rather than having the latest and greatest android build, im sure a majority of us would just rather have a very smooth not-so-battery-hungry version of android whether 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2..

I was just curious and wanted to try new XDANDROID.2.2.AOSP.1.7.10.BETA.V1 build from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711692
I have put all files to Andboot folder on my SD card, included STARTUP.TXT from 2.01 glossy version to be able to run haret, but no luck for me (after screen calibration and waiting some Android screen was shown but restart followed).
That was my 1st try with XDAdroid, so I expect it was my fault. Is this generic build compatible with X1, or we must wait for special Kovsky build (Tremere)?
Was anyone of you able to get it working, is there some simple procedure to follow (replace system or config files,...)?

I haven't actually tried their full release, the last I have was their system tree with my own rootfs. Its next on my list
The xdandroid alpha wouldn't be functional on the Xperia anyway, they wouldn't have my screen flip patch (yet)
I've started building my documentation wiki: http://mcbridematt.dhs.org/mobile/
Tomorrow I'll put info on what you need to boot Linux - HaRET, kernels etc. Should be enough for someone else to build and boot the open source Android release.

Sweet! Personally I'm more interested in MeeGo but I want to do app devel for Android as well.
(You might run into trouble with N900 images being compiled for armv7, which don't run on the Xperia, but you can cook your own image for armv5 from what I've read)
What is advantage of Gentoo vs current linux?
Unless you're 'cooking' your own mobile operating system, not much. Gentoo is source based so we can disable features we don't want (i.e CUPS printing). I have been experimenting with an Enlightenment e17 environment. Just need a dialer app (working on it) and a comm manager, and you have the best web browser ever on the X1.

Yes, the chip in our devices supports USB host mode so with the right cabling you could plug in USB devices to the Xperia. I've only seen it on the Hero and the newer Nexus One. One day I might try it out, a mouse and keyboard would be damn handy for hacking normal Linux distros

Tremere, don't worry, it has problems, but every alpha has them. It looks very promising to me, thank you for all your effort.
My first impressions are following.
1. System seems stable, no crash yet :)
2. GPRS is not working for me (calls are OK), maybe problem with my provider, but in older versions were OK :(
3. GPS seems to be working :)
4. GUI is more pretty, but a bit slow, I believe you can work on it later
Icon are smaller than in 2.01 or 2.1 (don't know if that''s 2.2 standard).
Lock screen seems is small and don't fits the whole screen at start, after disable it fits the screen, but notification area gets small...not a big deal, just a note.
6. Bluetooth and Wifi I can't enable, probably not working
7. I miss SetCPU application, maybe the speed problem is related to CPU clock

If GPRS doesn't work, reboot Android after adding the APN.
I set the dpi to 160, because I like the extra space :) If this is too small for you, just change the lcd.density argument in startup.txt
xperiaatic

icons and everything is defenetly smaller and because of that there are more things on screen and that is not bad thing at all. compared to other versions not that much slower though maybe even quicker in some places. screen rotation is impressively quick and works all the time. all in all it feels much more sturdier and better than any other previous versions i have tried by first impression.

This Android version seems very stable and faster than any other published for Xperia. Tremere has make a very good job on it. Issues:
1. GPRS doesnŽt work... IŽll try to config it and post feedback later.
2. Wi-Fi still doesnŽt work, but it can due to my phone config. Feedback later.
More about this release:
1. Icons are smaller than any other Android, but I like it!
2. This Andorid is the fastest OS IŽve tried on Xperia!
Only one question: This is Android 2.2 aka "Froyo"? I canŽt see it anywhere...
Thank a lot again Tremere for you work, keep on it!

First off, thank you for all your hard work!!
1) reboot / usual way / etc -- from previous Android releases, the way to power off / reboot / etc 'gracefully' is:
- HOLD the end key; let it vibrate/etc
- still held down, after a few seconds when the turn off/etc menu comes up,
WAIT a bit more, then, while still HOLDING the end key, push DOWN on the d-pad and make your selection via the 'middle' button (optical trackpad).. once highlighted, can RELEASE the end key, then say 'yes'
If *that*'s the 'usual' method that's inconvenient (vs removing battery).. well, hopefully/maybe someone learned something new =D
2) in other Android builds, additional languages were supported (e.g. Korean, Chinese, etc); as you get closer to Release Candidates, can you add in the other languages, either by default or as a separate download?
3) tried adding my carrier's APN settings and rebooting as suggested.. I get the "3G" symbol, but no actual traffic up/down.
thanks again!!

yes, that is the troublesome method and most of the time it restarts back to the droid. removing battery can make droid unbootable and you have to generate new system image.

- Very fast interface speed..
- Phone is working (instead of data connection)
- Maybe GPS is working too .. but not sure :D (Navigation needs internet)
- Bluetooth does not work
- Speaker is always on (but is working)
In Linpack Benchmark I get around 3,6MFlops (from 1,1 to 3,9 but most of the time 3,6)
To get normal screen size change in startup.txt all lcd.density to 240, not 160.

+ Sound works...
+ screen doesnt shine...
+ battery doesnt drain insanely fast ... but doesn't last overnight
+ GPS seems to work, I don't have data...
+ very smooth and "fast" compared to older releases...
- {the icons are small, and the lock-up screen is too small... wrong resolution. }
EDIT: changes after reboot!!
- {can't get apn to work with current rootfs, don't know what to change in the "new rootfs"...so no data for me yet... }
EDIT: after reboot I can make changes for the APN settings, but I'm in the archipelago in stockholm so my signal is to weak for data... or maybe it doesnt work? I have data with wm6.1...
- wifi - error!
- camera doesn't work
- gallery hangs for me
- speaker is always makin weak noises...
- the keyboard is messed up... numbers on wrong side and some symbols are'nt were they're supposed to...
- The light on the keyboard is off...
- (Minor detail: the bottomkeys (under the screen) always light-on if you boot with charger connected...)
still...
Thanks for your great work!

i hope so. i had an android phone and that is by far the best OS for any phone, nothing comes close..but i needed a few features that my phone didnt have so i got the xperia (after seeing it can run android). when it works flawlessly our xperias will still beat most phones in the market even though its 2-3 years old..
anyway, downloading now..ill start it up and play around for a bit..
EDIT:
i had the music running with a few other apps in the background while testing speed..transitions are fast, landscape to portrait and back is fast.. probably faster than wm6.5
typing on the keyboard and dialer is very smooth when using the stylus, no lag
it doesnt seem too finger friendly..or maybe i have big fingers? because it lags out when i use my fingers but its very smooth with the stylus.. only been 10 minutes of playing around with it though

With the latest rootfs.img from here (xdandroid.southcape.org/rootfs) you can set an apn and data connection works, but screen is upside down...
xperiaatic
11th July 2010, 07:49 AM
like i mentioned before i managed to get data working through changing rootfs.img to one found here:
http://xdandroid.southcape.org/rootfs/
but if change just rootfs.img then screen is upside down and you need init file from original rootfs.img to fix that. (under linux you can just mount img and copy over what is needed, under win you need to use some kind of image file manipulation tool, i don't use win so i don't know what to recommend). i'm no dev so i don't know, maybe this fix is like fixing teeth trough anal but at least it helps testing the port.
even after that reception is quite week and connection is very poor. it is a bit confusing because older builds got no such kind of problems.
all in all, the build is quite stable and it is indeed froyo 2.2 but no miracle here most of the similar faults are present like previous dev builds (i think rough kernel is to blame). for example, battery don't last even over night all the bells and whistles turned off.
biggest surprise was defenetly working GPS, as far as i know no other xperia build has accomplished that.

Sweet, that means they are building Android with the xperia patch in now. I need to send the init patch to them when I find a way to autodetect the Xperia in init. Then you can download the next release they do :)
The data issue is probably caused by incorrect file permissions generated by the xdandroid build. I'll try again this afternoon.

We are not sure when the updated Xperia version will be released by Tremere.
As Xdandroid BETA.V2 has been released in the meantime, Tremere will probably want to compile updated version and may need longer testing.
I would rather not push him to hurry with the fix, if there is other way.

Noticed quite a few modules (ie drivers) missing from the new rootfs, so I don't know if it has any interesting side-effects.

Xdandroid is a project to get android working on htc devices. The x1 is an htc device so part of the xdandroid build works but there is other stuff that needs to be modified to run on the x1. Tremere started the work I believe of porting the xdandroid froyo build to x1. And yes this is a thread about porting froyo (android 2.2) to the xperia x1. I hope This answers your question.:)

Wait..what are we discussing..??is this discussion about Xdandroid or Froyo??
I mean AFAIK, Xdandroid is making the Droid OS as a primary OS..so is this an attempt at making Froyo the main OS..if so, how??Where do we copy the files???
Hm somehow it's both..
Tremere's version is based on xdandroid.
And no, xdandroid does NOT replace WM.. they boot it with haret.exe as we do!
Copy files to root of SDCard.. you can also try "andboot"
Edit: Damn too late :D
P.S. vdelf hasn't so much time but this week he will try to merge our kernel with xdandroid.. so MAYBE next week we'll be able to download xdandroid from the main project thread :)

As some of you have already done, I've taken the stock xdandroid system.ext2 now that it has the screen fix.
GPRS doesn't seem to be fully solved - I had to save the APN then take the battery out and start again before it worked
All I need to do now is a) find a keymap - one I copied from an earlier port didn't work b) figure out why WiFi isn't scanning.

Tremere, are you are never tired? :)
Man, thank you for all your hard work for for this community.
Now a few impressions (I have tried it just for a while):
1. GUI is much smoother, more fluid, nearly perfect :D
2. Interface - I like new transparent icons on homescreen
3. Data connection works after APN is manually created and restart
4. Phone is quite hot, not sure if it's caused by weather or...
5. WIFi can be enabled, but no AP found by scan
6. GPS is working fine
7. Power and Panel buttons have a new function - homescreen selection

Just replace /usr/keylayouts/qwerty.kcm.bin /usr/keylayouts/qwerty.kl.
That is exactly what I used (after copying them to xperia-qwert.kcm.bin/.kl). Couldn't seem to find a menu or back key, and power button hard suspended the device (which should work, but we can't get out of it)
If you want to try and debug it, use 'physkeyboard=kovsq'/kovsa on the command line.
edit: Unless the keymap process used by xdandroid does something (i.e they have another keymap for the navi keys on raph), but we need to follow them.
edit x2: silly me, there is a typo in init

Haha, I'm on my winter break down here so I have dangerous amounts of free time!
I'm stuck on WiFi though, it just seems to break down after loading, thus the scanning bug. I can't find any difference between this and the last published xdandroid beta to explain why!
My changes to the rootfs are published at http://gitorious.org/~mcbridematt/xdandroid-eclair/mcbridematts-eclair-rootfs-xperia so hopefully they will be merged into xdandroid soon ;)

Compiled your latest kernel from
git://gitorious.org/~mcbridematt/linux-on-qualcomm-s-msm/mcbridematts-linux-msm-xdadev.git
together with latest compat-wifi + tiwlan.
Still unable to complete scan for AP. Is it a config problem with wpa_supplicant?
I notice that in /data/modules we have copies of wpa_supplicant.conf tiwlan.ini, Fwxxxxxx.bin etc.
Are they supposed to be there instead of in rootfs?
Tip for those working in windows:
Download Imdisk from Here (http://www.ltr-data.se/opencode.html#ImDisk)
and Ext2IFS from Here (http://www.fs-driver.org/)
- you can mount ext2 disk images as r/w directly from the shell menu and the images will appear as drives in explorer.
(Don't forget to unmount all drives before unplugging your phone!)
I'm a bit confused - what is the status of any patches from fatsal's repo with respect to your xdandroid clone at the moment?

Today's beta has solved my stability problem with Android market in yesterday's version (occasional application restart), so improvement for me :)
What i miss in this version (i mean Xdandroid 2.2) is better international support, in Xperoid 2.01 Glossy version it was perfect, all following features were working:
Automatic APN configuration according to provider
Support for location in Weather widget (now i get "unable to find location" error)
Support for "My location" detection in Maps via GSM network (without GPS that takes long time to initialize and drains battery) was working, in Xdandroid version it's unable to detect my location (only via GPS).
Can we expect these features to be available in XDAndroid 2.2 version?
I know there are more important things to solve - hardware drivers still incomplete for many devices (Bluetooth, Wifi, Speaker control, HW keyboard, camera, battery + power management etc), but these functionality improvements are maybe easier to fix.

Loaded the 13th July version and can confirm the GPRS (or 3G/NextG in my case) worked fine, as did the GPS.
No overheating, but battery drained very quickly and without notice. Android said 5% left and when I rebooted into Win Mobile that really was the case! The battery was near 100% when I first booted into Android.
Despite the above, this is definitely the fastest and most stable Android release I have tried on the Xperia. Was about to upgrade to a Desire or X10, but I'd miss that real keyboard...

and, as stated in other threads, you can go to "spare parts --> end button behavior" and choose nothing, in order to stop the weird behavior of the end button.
And for the devs, keep up the great work!

Set the APN manually, then restart your phone. t should work. if you have problems, disable 3g network.

I still have issue with resolution despite trying the updated startup.txt file few posts above. All icons are somewhat small and most applications (like music player or dialer) do not fill up the screen. BTW, if I am not wrong in the calculations X1 has around 320 dpi screen, no? Is that the number that needs to be changed only in startup txt to fix icon sizes/etc?

what i did was replacing every "160" for a "240" on the startup.txt file. Worked just fine. (lcd.density=)

Yes, thanks - that was my problem, I overlooked one of them :)
I tried putting to to 320 but it is too large (screen native DPI is 320). Placing 240 now

Just replace /usr/keylayouts/qwerty.kcm.bin /usr/keylayouts/qwerty.kl.)
Quick question... how do i browse to the above folders? i cant find them on the storage card while using the device as mass storage. What am i missing?

First of all, thanks for this wonderful build. I'm finally using Android as my primary OS :D
GPRS,3G working fine - Set APN manually. Sometimes it may not add it properly, simply reboot and it'll work.
Haven't tested WIFI yet.
Keymap is a bit screwed up but I can live with it, will try the above fix and update.
Battery usage seems good so far.
Edited the Startup.txt and changed all lcd.density to 240. Not only the icons are better, the interface seems to be faster.
Shutting down android - lock ur screen first by pressing End key. Then press the power button to turn ur screen back on. Now ur key is locked, press and hold End key to bring up the power off menu. Click power off, then yes. Voila no weird vibrations.
GPS working perfectly.
What more can we ask for? :) Thanks a lot again.
Wrote this from my X1 from the same Android build using the nice lil xda app :)

For me it is just a black screen with backlight on and then it buzzes and android shows up. Everything works very well though and its stable and fast even with widgets.

This is the best android build so far, mad propz!!
We are getting close :)
turning the device off is a pain in the ass, and i do not want to pull out the battery because that could corrupt the files on the SD-card. Any alternative options to turn it off?
menu>Spare parts>End call button behaviour> Nothing(first option)
Then, long press the the end call button and a menu wil pop up with three options and thats it, say shut down.
THX that works :)
And is it just me or does changing the lcd.density not only visually change the screen but also affect the overall speed? It seems slower than previous settings
@circleofomega
No problems playing music with the music player from my sd card

Am i doing something worng..I have to extract all the files from the 79MB .rar and just place it on the root of the mem card...
Also, how do i make the Music folder?
Do i manually create one or will the mem card do it on its own and if so, then how?
korgak
14th July 2010, 09:19 AM
No need for a "Music"-folder. My music has been put in the directory name "Muziek" (dutch for music) So the name does not matter at all. (it recognises my music automatically)
And yes, extracting the contents of the rar-file to the root of the memorycard is correct.
Btw, Why do we use the lcd.density=160 (or whatever it is) do the devs agree its a bit faster? Or is it just easier for some strange purpose?
OK thx FatTrousers

thought i doubt with x1's hardware can run froyo well but still appreciate if have it
Well it should be able to run well on the x1. It should increase the performance, on the device it self. So I do not see why it would not run smoothly.

cell idle costs 48% cpu time.
I can confirm that, on mine it's 49% of battery usage consumed by "Cell standby" (according to Battery monitor app).
I think the way to prolong battery life is to optimize radio usage, let's hope Xdandroid team will work on that.
Temperature of my X1 is much higher at home where is quite weak signal compared to my work where signal is strong (and device is just little bit warmer in Android compared to WM).
