View Full Version : [MOD] Apps that can be deleted due root
Jonas.M
28th June 2010, 03:29 PM
Now that we have got root, we can delete some of the Apps that are Preinstalled.
I wanted to make a list with Files that can be deleted without causing problems.
To delete any of this Files you need root + some sort of Root Explorer or Root Manager
I tested this with both of Leshaks ways of gaining root and used Root Explorer to delete the files.
The Direction where they can be found is /system/app
First off all the Standard Apps:
Aldiko eBook -> aldiko-standard-1.2.6.1....apk
Allshare -> Dlna
BuddiesNow -> Buddiesnow.apk
Clock -> clockpackage.apk
bookstore - bookstore.apk
Daily Briefing -> Infoalarm.apk
Layer -> Layer-samsung.apk
Memo -> Memo.apk
Mini Diary -> MiniDiary.apk
Myfiles -> Myfiles.apk
Messages -> MMS.apk
Navigation -> Navigation.apk
SozialHub -> undifinedInbox.apk
uTalk -> clientUTalk-03062010.apk
VoiceRecorder-> VoiceRecorder.apk
VoceDialer-> VoiceDialer.apk
Writeandgo -> Writeandgo.apk
LiveWallpapers:
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpaperpicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
TATLivewallpapersAurora.apk
TATLivewallpapersBlueSea.apk
TATLivewallpapersDandelion.apk
TATLivewallpapersOceanwave.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
pre installed Tw Wallpapers:
TwWallpaperChoos.apk
TouchwizWidgets:
Days.apk
Dualclock.apk
SamsungWidget_stockclock.apk
SamsungWidget_Feedandupdate.apk
SamsungWidget_Calenderclock.apk
SamsungWidget_Weatherclock.apk
I also tried to delete the Touchwiz Launcher and Replace it with the Launcher Pro Beta and it kinda worked. But there was a bugreport that said
"android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. - Force close"

I tried using root explorer, es strongs, etc... to deleted system/app applications (such as the utalk application in the F5 firmware) and it keeps coming back!
how do you successfully remove those ?
and what is the APK for bookstore ? the russian one in F5 firmware.

no problem, i havent tried root using adb but it shouldnt make a difference.
with csc, there is a tool that opens if a app wants to use root.
i am not familiar with adb root but perhaps you have to allow the programm to use root manual...

I've just rooted my phone and it's my first android experience so can I just go ahead and delete these APKs? They will automatically disappear from my widgets/app list or do I have to perform some sort of uninstall first?
(I'm comfortable enough with su/linux commands to understand what I'm doing)

It is not recommended that you delete gtalkservice.apk. Even though it is primarly used for Gtalk, the market also leverages this for communication when downloading apps.
Jonas.M
28th June 2010, 11:09 PM
How did you disable it?
Install Launcher Pro, then push the hardware button. A Window opens where you have to choose between the two launchers. You mark use as default and pick launcher pro. If you look at your Prozess you can see that tw launcher is still running. Now you have to reboot youre phone. Afterwards it should not be running anymore.-> Disable ;)

First of all you have to install Root explorer. Then go to /system/app and simply delete the apk files that are linked to the apps you want to get loose.
But some apks like the tw launcher should not be deleted, because this still causes problems ;)

You can uninstall system apps using ADB or use app on the device something like Root Explorer or root manager...
with root explorer you can browse to /system/app and delete (or move to sd for backup) .apk that you want to uninstall.

UnifiedInbox is Social hub, not SNS.. if you removed SNSProvider/SNSAccount, Facebook Samsung app will break (can't login) and I'm not sure if that's applicable for standard Facebook app or not.

You are right, after deleting SNS stuff and UnifiedInbox, can not add facebook account in the "Account and sync" setting menu. I used official Facebook app and no problems yet seen...

If I try to delete the apk files in sytem/app using android mate as root explorer it states that it cannot delete the file. Is this due to android mate? (which is granted superuser access) Does anybody knows of a free root explorer that should work with this?(if this is where the problem is...) Thanks!
Edit: Nevermind, seems to work now...

If Launcher Pro is able to relpace TWLauncher.apk, can you post a vid of it proving it. There are devs from the N1/G1/MT3G forums saying it isnt possible. Theres MANY people who hate TouchWiz like myself and want to rid it from the phone altogether.

We have had it replaced on the Behold 2 with Advanced Launcher. I think Launcherpro and ADW can be put in there as well.
http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-behold-2/64036-port-behold-2-1-6-no-twiz-w-busybox-rooted-kernel.html
You can't get rid of everything like the drop down menu or the dialer (I'm not 100% sure about the dialer but I have not seen anyone change it on there behold 2) but you can get rid of most of touchwiz.

Is there any chance we can have a clean sticky for which apps people have removed and had no problems with? The SGS has so much bloat installed I think having a simple list will be helpful for new people who might not find this thread.

Some of us are being referred from the Samsung Vibrant forum so those that venture this way possibly need to keep in mind that this is for THE original Galaxy S and that not ALL apps listed are going to show up.
Am I wrong?
With that being said... OP thank you for setting me on the right track! My GSV is running so much smoother!

Whether it is a sticky or not, I think a list with confirmation of an apps removal with no problems would be great.
I have been following this thread, but so far have not deleted anything.
Figured I would wait a while and see what problems were posted.

This has been a very helpful thread so thanks to all who have had input.
I've got two Navigation apps on my phone. One is Google and the other is from Samsung.
Does anyone know the name of the file that relates to the Samsung Navigation so I can remove it?
Thanks,
Ignore this, It turns out it's Navigation that you delete and this removes the Samsung Navigation software

Very helpfull thread from Cyanogen, I want to underline the "adb uninstall <package>" method wich worked greate for me, after deleting apk/odex files you can find package name in settings->application->manage->filter->all they all start with "com." and if after tapping on them you see the "Uninstall" button you are sure you can apply the adb uninstall method.
Also pay attention to the list on first page, some name are misspelled. Most of apk file have first letter in CAPS, my advice is to find the exact name with ls /system/app | grep <N/name> this way you can find also the associated odex file if exists

You still need root & USB debugging in "Settings->Applications->Development" must be enabled!
And then do the following in terminal:
adb shell

Accept root access on phone!
pm list packages
It is for listing all of your packages -> not really needed if you don't want to list all of your packages and only want to remove what I removed!
pm disable com.sec.android.app.minidiary
pm disable com.sec.android.app.writeandgo
pm disable com.aldiko.android.samsung
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.buddiesnow
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.infoalarm
pm disable com.sec.android.app.memo
pm disable com.sec.android.app.unifiedinbox
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.days
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.dualclock
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.stockclock
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.feedsandupdate
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.calendarclock
pm disable com.sec.android.widgetapp.weatherclock
I restarted my phone to make sure evertything worked OK.
This will only disable these packages and will NOT remove them, so you can later re-enable them if you need them.
Thanks to Jonas.M for the first post to point out which packages needed to be removed and Paul O'Brien for his great tutorial (http://bit.ly/c2am8R) with additional info.
