In the built-in Mesages app, there's a new option in Settings > AT&T Messages Backup & Sync. I had turned it on after the 4.4.3 update.

Once you turn it on, the only way to turn it off is from myAT&T (the website or the app); you have to go into the Services and remove Messages Backup & Sync.
