It sounds like there is an issue with the fastboot drivers. I had this happen to me. I went through and uninstalled all the drivers and tried again. If you keep having issues uninstall drivers again and download PDAnet. Check the OP for download. The PDAnet drivers will work.

I have a GSM Gnex and I followed everything perfectly and have root access. However I cannot boot into CWM. After I booted I then proceeded to download rom manager from the market as instructed. I hit flash recovery in rom manager and nothing happens. So I then try to use fast boot to get into CWM and still nothing just an android laying on his back with a red explanation mark on his stomach. I then battery pull and it boots fine. I downloaded root checker from market and it confirms I have root access. CWM worked fine when I used it to flash the SU.zip but now nothing. Can come one help me me out pleeeeeease

I think this is the same issue I've been having, I'm not able to permanently flash cwm to the thing.
