make sure your bootloaders match your radio I've heard that might be the cause of the data drops.

Question Updates??
Will my Galaxy Nexus still get official automatic updates if I unlock the bootloader, root phone, rename recovery restore files, flash custom recovery(CWM Touch), and install this kernel? (I'm on stock ROM, and have no plans to install any other)

The answer to that question is no!
You need stock everything to get updates.

What version are you on? 4.0.4?
If so you don't need to worry about upgrades for a while.
You can back up app data and text messages with titanium backup and contacts are stored in the cloud so they will sync to your phone again once you set up a new rom.
