I would say that it depends on the user.

I use copter as screen protector and it works really well. But I just use it because i cant live with even a tiny little scratch on the screen

I was one of those having a fully trust on Gorilla glass until i found few lilltle scratches while cleaning my screen. Have no clue how it happened since i was dam, careful aboutthe screen etc ... but they were there, right on my screen. So, gorilla glass is indeed awsome but its clearly not a 100% protection.

I made my choice to get screen protector after saw friend's SGSII with badly scratched screen. I placed screen protector, now I see the damage on it which could possibly damaged phone screen without protector. I think it is necessary as you can place your phone near keys or sth. anytime or dropped it and so on.

+1, i also see many damages on my screen protector which confirm the fact that using one is almost an obligation. Sure, you need some time to get used to your screen protector , but once its done, you feel petty no big difference.

I use screen protector for my S2, but to avoid oil from my fingers.

First time I didn't use any screen protector, but oil from my fingers made my screen looks bad

Gorilla Glass has little to no resistance when it comes to sand.
I had a bit of sand in my pocket with my phone and got scratches. Most probably from walking/moving.

A screen protector isn't expensive, so better safe than sorry.
