You can also use an app, say ringdroid, which should move your trimmed song to the required directory.

Create a folder in external it ringtones.. Just copy your mp3 files to that folder... Simple..

Handcent SMS also has ringtones picker integrating itself in settings menu. So does builtin file manager/explorer.

download gosms pro from there u can choose ur ringtone for phone calls, messenger etc
