Question android hotspot blocks ports in traffic between connected wifi peers

Rooted 2.3
turned off 3G
turned on builtin hotspot

connected laptop and pc
most ports are blocked

had to use openvpn to go around that problem, but feels like an over kill

I just learned recently that the ip address range the dhcp server provides for the connecting wifi peers
is hard coded into the rom and can not be changed if using the built in hotspot program.

but it feels unreasonable that the useable ports range is so tiny and unconfigureable as well,
because many apps can define new ports for their own use, right?
my basic example would be any droid-torrent client out there.

basically what I'm trying to do - is run synergy (which require certain, changeable ports to be allocated for it's traffic - it shares mouse and keyboard over the network) between the pc and the laptop using the android's wifi
which works fine using the vpn server, but I would rather it worked without.

thanks a bunch! ^_^
