I'm pleased to say that with all the great info on this site, I did install KitKat with the cyanogenmod mod. I have been unable to unlock the phone per the instructions in this thread. I still seem to have the modem installed (I9100XXKI4) but I don't have an active SIM. Would this prevent me from unlocking?
Feel like I'm having a conversation with myself (I guess I am). I found a great app Play Store, GalaxySim Unlock App. It checks your Sansung phone, let you know if it will be able to unlock it, you pay $4 for pro version in the app after confirmation that it can, and seconds later, successfully unlock. after reboot with a Vodafone SIM in it, it welcomed me to roaming in Canada (ouch, rates look really bad!!)
Very, very happy  I hope my noob questions and answers to myself helps others. I'm sure there are many legacy 3 year contracts coming to an end this year for the Galaxy S2 and S2 LTE.
Phone has a new lease on life for my daughter on a pay as you go...
