im running srx3.0 and am updated to ne4 bootloader and modem. could I use the flashable nj1 modem and bootloader zip to update the bootloader and modem only?

Yes, you can use the combo zip to update just the BL & MDM. I actually went from MJB incrementally to NE4, then NJ1 & finally the latest NJ2. My LTE has been solid since updating to NJ2. Less call drops with NJ2 than NJ1. I'm sure you know, but incase you dont I'll say it. You can update BL & MDM, but you can't downgrade. You can't skip versions either.

thanks. that is what I was planning on doing. I'm running tmo version of s3rx v3 on my I747. I've tried the s3rx v4 a little but haven't switched. I was thinking to update bl & mdm only just like you said. ne4 to nj1 to nj2. but knowing that I can't go back I didn't want to be forced to a new rom because of the bootloader or modem . especially if enewman doesn't rebase s3rxv4 on nj2. I love his work!

I am kinda out of ideas at this point, the S3 I747 I got originally had 4.4.2 stock with NE4 bootloader, rooted and with TWRP as recovery, I made a backup and flashed SlimLP on it to try it out, but now I want to go back to my 4.4.2 backup and it gets stuck at the att logo, so after couple of factory resets I gave up and tried the restore zip in the OP and the same thing happens again, does anyone have any ideas I could try, I want to go back to stock 4.4.2.

Alright after taking out the battery and going back into recovery I saw that twrp was gone and the stock recovery was there, so I did factory reset in there and rebooted and it booted up, so I'm back in business, stock 4.4.2 rooted.
Thanks for all the great resources guys.

I am confused after reading a few threads. I saw a few statements saying that the NE & NJ Bootloaders are unlocked.

Can someone break this bootloader down a bit? I am far from a n00b. My understanding was : Installing 4.3 last release or above locked bootloader and would cause a brick if downgrading. I personally consider NOX Spyware... I noticed that the KitKat and above apparently introduced the requirement of matching modems.

I am getting ready in the next few months to get a newer phone. I wanted to have the latest CM12.1 based rom on it, in case I need it again. I am having issues with 12 & 12.1,so I began researching what was different. I thought my baseband issue was from the efs partition format changing to ext4? I read somewhere to re symlink the fw files, which didn't help. I had odd issues in cm11 with every other rim having sound&data, then not having these. I want to start fresh again. I am currently at mjb modem&boot.
TLDR:
Could someone please clarify specifically which bootloaders are unlocked and should I use the guide mjb to NE. I feel like its reasonable, but am confused with my newfound info. I have read that I must apply each incremental update until on NEx, seems tedious! I may be thinking about the Verizon model, but thought knox locked all models up tight. AT&T only recently become an option, but has less coverage in the area.

my best guess is : yes , having the mjb modem will cause issues with data and possibly wifi with newer ROMs. my best understanding is no bootloaders are locked (went all the way to mj1 with no issues). and yes flash incrementally and reboot inbetween. and again yes ; bootloaders/modems have to match. you will 99.99999% brick if downgrade after NE4. dont have a link but enewman has a thread with flasable bootloader/modem combos , so you can flash both at once. good luck.

Thank you, I saw his thread on mjb ti ne4. Darn swiftkey acting up, else I would have pasted it. This is a reason why, I will soon jump ship to another OEM. I do not have reason to downgrade before KitKat anyway...

I know mrrocketdog has already replied, I am just adding to that answer.

Part of the confusion comes from how people define "locked bootloader." A large part of this community considers a "locked bootloader" to be one that will not allow you to flash unsigned ROMs, recoveries, etc. This does not exclude those bootloaders blocking the ability to downgrade to previous bootloaders. Using that definition all of the AT&T bootloaders for this device would be unlocked. You are still able to flash TWRP, CWM, and PhIlz custom recoveries as well as custom ROMs; both TouchWiz and AOSP/CM. This is the "locked bootloader" definition I work with.

Others would say that, in and of itself, the inability to downgrade the bootloader classifies a bootloader as locked.

I would consider the SGS3 on Verizon service to have a locked bootloader if you took the update to NE1 (4.4.2). You can not install a custom recovery. Other than the 4.4.2 stock ROM there are only two other ROMs you can use, both stock based I believe. They must be installed from within SafeStrap, not a custom recovery. It definitely can not be downgraded. Fortunately it can still be rooted.

I went into more depth about the bootloaders here.

I have an S3 with 4.4.2 stock NJ1 ROM and bootloader with "null IMEI" and unknown baseband. Is there a way to fix it by flashing back to NE4 using Odin, or reflashing the NJ1 radio?

I made this reply in the other thread you posted to:
If you have the NJ1 bootloader Do Not flash back to NE4. You will brick.
Being on NJ1 it would be safe to flash the same modem. The safest thing would be flashing the NJ1 bootloader/modem combination file. I have seen download links in several threads started by enewman17. At the moment I don't recall if any were Odin flashable. All I am sure about are the ones flashable from a custom recovery like TWRP. (Found in the OP of the other thread you posted to.)

Hi,

I am trying to follwing the steps provided in this tutorial to update my Galaxy S3 I 747 but need some help.

After going through most of the steps I am stuck on the last step "*You will loose root during the update* But the bootloader is not locked so you can still Odin your favorite recovery and flash SuperSU."

my problem is that I am not able to odin into my phone. this is due to a broken usb port. I am hoping someone here can provide me with an alternative to root the phone without connecting to the pc.

Thanks a lot

Matt

The development for the AT&T I747 has been discontinued by the developer. Thank you for your support.

WARNING YOU WILL PROBABLY BRICK YOUR PHONE
UCUFNJ1 4.4.2 incremental update contains firmware.... bootloaders and modem baseband.
MUST BE ON UCUFNE4 FIRMWARE TO CONTINUE!!!
Guide can be found here. http://xdaforums.com/galaxy-s3-att/...are-update-t2808654/post53984772#post53984772

This is the perfect time to use this update to return your S3 to stock for resale or whatever. Download and save these files for when you are ready to return your phone to stock.

*This is a rooted NE4 system.img, stock recovery.img and boot.img. The install script will format system and factory data reset. /media is safe.*
1. Flash restore zip in a custom recovery. CWM, TWRP, Philz. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001611561
2. Boot your phone and go through setup.
3. Use triangle away and clear your counter. http://xdaforums.com/galaxy-s2/orig-development/2014-01-15-triangleaway-v3-26-t1494114
4. *Optional* If you want a clean un-rooted phone for the update do this now! , Go into SuperSu >settings>full unroot.
5. Reboot your phone.
6. Search for the OTA in the about settings, download and let the phone update.
Or download this and place in the root of your phones internal storage. Reboot into recovery and select the update from update.zip https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001611091

Advanced users.
The original OTA cfg file. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95784891001611092
.cfg file goes in root/cache/fota
Rename the .cfg extension to .zip and you can rename it update.zip yourself or you can actually flash it in a custom recovery once renamed. if you choose not to use the stock recovery to update.

*You will loose root during the update* But the bootloader is not locked so you can still Odin your favorite recovery and flash SuperSU.
TWRP 2.8.1.0 Odin tar. http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/d2att/openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-d2att.tar
SuperSU http://download.chainfire.eu/589/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.16.zip?retrieve_file=1

Once you flash your favorite recovery via Odin, you need to be ready to hold the Volume Up, Power and Home button combo when Odin reboots your phone. If you don't catch it, once the OS boots it will replace recovery with the stock version. Once SuperSU is installed your recovery will stick.

Unfortunately, NJ1 & NJ2 cannot be rooted w/o a PC & Odin.

---------- Post added at 03:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:08 AM ----------

I should also warn you, DO NOT TRY TO DOWNGRADE. YOU WILL BRICK THE PHONE. Best advice I can give you is to take it into a repair shop get the devices USB port fixed & then follow op's instructions to root via Odin & TWRP. This is the only possible way to root NJ1 & NJ2. Sorry bud.

Thanks for saving me a lot of time canodroid15. I am a little bit of do it myself guy so will try and repair the usb on the phone it was anyways on my to do list. Found some videos on the same online. the rooting part was weird as I saw on some threads (not on xda) that some people had success with kingoroot and when I ran it my rootchecker sometimes says I have root some times does not.

One last question does having root matter for installing twrp if I remember correctly I should still be able to install twrp and flash a rooted rom. Am I missing somthing? Reason I am asking this is because after installing kingoroot I was able to install rommanager and install twrp and I am not sure if that was because of incomplete/semi working root or something else.

Thanks,
Matt

If you have TWRP on the phone, then yes you can flash any custom ROM & you're golden. Or just flash SuperSU in recovery. If you flash a custom ROM with root you'll be rid of kingoroot & rooted correctly. May I make a suggestion.... Try OctOS for d2att, I think you'll love it? Use open gapps for a complete installation.

http://opengapps.org/

Or if you want a good stock ROM that's pre-rooted just flash one of enewman17's TW ROMs ? Good luck!

If you don't mind, could you link me to the specific kingoroot that you used to root on NJ1? I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks man!

Thanks for the suggestions canodroid15. I will give octos rom a try. For now started with CM12.1 and will switch weekly to see which one I like. My main criteria is battery life. I would appreciate if you can provide the link for TW ROMS.

The rooting was little weird as I myself have no clear idea as to what rooted the phone. I started with the Framaroot (1.9.3) on this thread: http://xdaforums.com/apps/framaroot/root-framaroot-one-click-apk-to-root-t2130276

tried all options but didn't seem like any of them worked. I then tried this thread:
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=2421802

which asked to use a older version of Framaroot (1.5.3).

when that too didn't work I tried the link on the above thread that said "Ultimate List of One Click Root Apps" and used kingoroot from link and then towelroot by going to their website from my phone itself.

At one of these points the phone was partially rooted (my guess it was kingoroot as that apk went the farthest (tried it a few times) untill the second last step before failing).

at this point my rootchecker showed I have root sometimes and no proper root sometimes. so I used the Rashr app from app store and installed twrp when root checker showed I had root.

Sorry for being so confusing but I was literally trying anything I could get my hands on.

Thanks,
Matt

If battery life is your main criteria, check out these two threads:
http://xdaforums.com/android/general/guide-0-0-hour-idle-battery-drain-stock-t2973588
http://xdaforums.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884

They both are working to decrease battery consumption during idle times. They both depend on xPosed and the Amplify module. This approach should work on TW and CM/AOSP based roms.

As far as Enewman17's roms, he may have been referring to these:

Is it necessary to update the modem/bootloader in order to move to a 6.0M based ROM? (OctOS or unofficial CM...)

I'm currently on MJB and CM11. When I moved from stock 4.1.2 to CM11 it was necessary to update modem/bootloader to MJB in order to make SIMcard recognized.

If it isn't necessary then is it advisable? I find both arguments of
1. dont touch it if it works
2. update to get possibly more speed...

Anyone with expertise?
Greatly appreciated,
Eriks

OK, its been a few weeks since the NJ1 update. Just wanted to pass on some background info...in case others were experiencing the same problems as me on NE4. I'd LOVE to be able to scour through the baseband code and see what IS different but whatever.

On NE4, in low signal areas, I'd get dropped calls or (a "crackly" call right before a dropped call) as well as what I would call degraded performance on Wifi (i.e. 24mb down in the house but the best the phone would do is 5mb down).

These issues appear to have been fixed on NJ1. Also...screen mirroring (I have a Samsung Smart TV) works as intended with no to very little lag.

I wish they would have fixed a camera app bug (if you set Auto-Contrast to ON...the setting does not persist (stick) once you close the camera app.

I want to thank the OP again for this thread...Its hard to believe that my 2 year old GS3 paired to a ZeroLemon 7000mah battery is pretty much still fulfilling my smartphone needs, but it is. I'm more than likely going to keep it for another 6-7 months until I finally relent and upgrade.

I've read this whole thread but can't find clarifications...

I've downloaded the NJ1 bootloader and modem flashable zip. Now I'm on a cm12 alpha build, NE4 modem and bootloaders from enewman's older thread... Will i be safe if i flash the modem+bootloader NJ1 zip? Thanks!

    Yeah you'll be fine.
