Hm.. This is interesting..

If I put CWM recovery on, and try to format /preload it fails - make_ext4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p10
Showing the log, I get the following:

Formatting /preload...
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/mmcblk0p10
Error formatting /preload!
Block size: 4096
Blocks per group: 32768
Inodes per group: 7168

Journal blocks: 2240
Label:
Blocks: 143360
Block groups: 5
Reserved block group size: 39
error: make_ext4fs_internal: cannot lookup security context for /preload/
E:format_volume: make_ext4fs failed on /dev/mmcblk0p10
Error formatting /preload!

Seems interesting.. Wonder if a restructured pit with that partition moved elsewhere on the device might help? (presuming such is possible)

Still stuck with this.. Interestingly, heimdall can't flash the various pit files - I get "ERROR: Failed to confirm end of PIT file transfer!" with all the ones I've tried.
Is anyone with a working 16GB i9300 able to pull out their pit file with heimdall and attach it?

Cheers,

Well, at this point I've given up.. Nothing has made the damned bit of difference, so it'll get consigned to the waste pile most likely.

I suspect that all that is left is some sort of device that can do more, such as the z3x flasher, but frankly that's too much work and cost. Oh well.
