Default Installing a romantic without backup?

Total noob here. I've just rooted my S3 and was wondering if I can install a rom without backing up my original? Basically, my warranty is almost up and not worth a bottle of pop anyway and I'd love to get rid of all the Samsung tripe.
I will no doubt have a thousand other questions further down the line but for the minute I'd appreciate some advice on the above.
If this is a silly post, please don't be too hard on me, we all got to start somewhere.

Thanks in advance.
Edit: forgive the title, damn predictive text, should read rom

Your first step towards installing a new rom weould be flashing a recovery with odin. you could easily backup your current system after flashing this, it's not a must though.
You really should do a backup of your efs partition after flashing the recovery as this one is quite easily deleted.

Lol, the title caught my attention!
Do a backup once and place it over a safe place....
Then flash whatever with peace.....

But remember, its better to backup then to say sorry.....
