Looks like a new standard in QI charging will be available soon. From the WPC website the new version 1.2 will be backwards compatible with the old 1.1 QI standard. The newer version should allow charging the device up to 2 inches away from the charger.

Sounds like a win win situation.

2 inches is a serious distance...most magnets don't have a field that extends that far.

Yes that would be very impressive. What amazes me is that the standard is backwards compatible. They are saying that the charging distance on the 1.1 receivers could reach 32 mm from the new QI 1.2 charger pad. The link below gives more information.
