New member here. I've read through this thread and have some questions. I recently purchased a USB wall charger from monoprice. The charger is supposed to provide 2.4A through any single port however i'm only getting around 1.5-1.6A on average when charging my Galaxy S5 (as seen on Battery monitor widget). It does have spikes where it hits ~2A charge but it isn't sustained. I'm using the stock samsung USB 3.0 cable which has 23awg for power.

Why am I not getting the full 2.4A constantly? What is the limiting factor here?

If you use a stock rom (touchwiz) and a stock kernel the S5 has a maximum charge rate of 1.8A with power on and 2.0A with power off. You can only set up the charging rate with a custom kernel like Boeffla. I charge with 2.2A. More can kill your phone.

The difference between USB 2.0 and 3.0 cable is only the speed between PC and Smartphone. The charging rate is the same (I mean the cable, not the ports).

just did a test from 1% and found that there's a HUGE difference in charging speed between USB 2.0 and 3.0. all you have to do to verify this is get an old Samsung USB 2.0 cable and a Samsung 3.0 USB Cable. To keep things scientific use the same wall adapter plugged into the same wall jack.

Now plug the first one in and wait 5 minutes then check the estimated time until full, then try again with the other cable. you'll find that USB 3.0 takes about 1:40 whereas USB 2.0 takes about 4 hours.

USB2.0 charges in 1:40 here, 0-100%, stock cable and wall charger

Same here, also stock cable and charger. 4 hours to charge the phone means there's something wrong with the charger or cable.

There's something wrong with your cable. I use Anker usb 2 cables (20awg for 5v & ground wires) and my phone charges in around 70 mins.

Some motherboards (Mine included) have an option in the BIOS to increase power to USB3.0 ports

That might be why some of you see better charging times on USB3.0, and some don't
