Just posting this FYI...

As known the new android 4.4 kitkat doesn't allow writing to the external microsd card (ExtSd). There is a fix for rooted users. There's even an app to apply this fix.

So after applying the fix all is fine. All your apps can write to the external SD card... Except Polaris office 5. The option to save is just greyed out.

Here's what the Polaris customer support said in a typical utterly useless canned response:

Me:
Quote:

App / Desktop Polaris Office Inquiry
1. Version of OS : 4.4.2
2. Version of Polaris Office : 5.0.3406.05
3. Name of Device: Galaxy S5 SM-G600F

In the recent version of android, writing to the external sd card is limited. For many users, this is a reason to root their phone and enable external sd card writing by apps. Many Polaris users have a large collection of documents on their SD card. Moving these to the internal storage isn't a good option, because on the Galaxy S5 you get only 16gb, from which 10gb is free, which is needed for apps.

Currently:
When i edit a document from the external sd card, save is greyed out. This is expected behavior in a regular kitkat phone. In a rooted phone with external sd write enabled, however, there's no reason to grey out the save function.

Desired:
When writing to all external sd folders is possible, allow the save function.

I would very much appreciate this function!

Response:
Quote:

Dear Customer,
We apologize for the inconvenience by using POLARIS Office.

Unfortunately Polaris Office doesn’t support “Saving document in external sdcard on Kitkat OS(from 4.4 OS)” cause of update Google policy.

If you have any further question about kitkat(4.4.2) support, please contact device manufacturer.

Thanks for your interest.

Solution: SD writing does work in other office programs. Even the free and fine google Docs / Sheets / Slides can save to ExtSd, but you have to manually enter the proper location, even if you opened the file from the ExtSd card.
