I rooted last week using towel root, yesterday I noticed an available security update from Samsung/Verizon. If I install it will this unroot my phone?

Updates usualy remove root, you could try enabling the survival mode in the superSU app if you have the paid superSU Pro. This should keep your phone rooted after an update.

Yup, look in system/apps and rename ‘wssyncmldm.apk’ to ‘wssyncmldm.apk.bak
