TWRP can't see the files on it though, would this be because I formatted it as FAT rather than exFAT?

I'm on playfulgods swipable CWM and it automounts. In TWRP you may have to mount it manually.

Yep, in TWRP go to "Mounts" and click on USB OTG. I love my Meenova, keep it on my keys although I almost lost the cap twice pulling my keys out of my pocket, luckily I was on asphalt and heard it hit the ground. Otherwise it's great.
