Got my dad his first smart phone ... Nexus 5. One week later and he can't make phonecalls or record sound because the mic won't work. I did some testing and the only way it would work is by attaching a headphone which he hates. Any other solutions out there?

Unfortunately, RMA seems to be the only solution. Google is really quick about it though, in case you/your dad might be worried about the time. What will happen when you contact google is they will send you a RMA prepaid shipping form to be attached to the box you send your N5 back in, as well as a link that lets you order a replacement device. This page might lead you to believe you are paying for another phone, but they will not charge you- they are only authorizing it. You can also choose shipping speed from the page, but I'm not sure if shipping costs are refunded.
