Default [Q] Restoring a backup without an SD card

Hey guys, I Google'd and searched for half an hour but couldn't find a definitive answer so sorry if this has been asked before.

Current status: bootloader unlocked, rooted, TWRP recovery, stock kernel and stock ROM (4.4.2)

So I'm going to backup everything using TWRP and this will save the backup to my internal storage. However I read in one of the beginners guides here that to install custom ROM's you should wipe data. So won't that delete the backup I just made?

An ultimately clean install would wipe the /data/media partition, however when you factory reset in TWRP it only wipes App data and not the virtual internal (/data/media).
