Default Stock kernel

Hi guys, I was wondering If I was to revert to stock google kernel from a custom kernel on stock rom, would I just need to flash it? Or do I need to factory reset etc? thanks in advance
Phone: Samsung Galaxy SII(retired)
Rom: Slimsaber 4.3 20131205

Phone: Red nexus 5
Rom: Stock rooted
Kernel: Franco r33

Only flashing the stock kernel is ok but it is preferable to also flash the system.img as the custom kernel might have left some codes in it but no need to factory reset it.
