Hello SMS looked very good until I read the privacy policy. I'm not interested in passing any of my data over a third party server for a task as simple as sending texts.

Any other recommendations?

QKSMS is by far the best texting app I have ever used, it was made by a dev on XDA and ever since early alpha it's been my daily driver. Simple UI, no over the top features, slick, quick and beautiful. https://plus.google.com/communities/...23434189541823

You have TextSecure for sms & mms. Really good & secure app. It's free, no ad.
