I use double tap on navigation bar instead. Via the G3 tweak box and xposed.

I have Apex, restored from my Note II backup via TBU. Works great until I get to about my 4th widget, then I can't add any more. Long-press on the screen does nothing until I reboot, OR I get to the 3rd tap needed to add my app and then it registers the tap on the screen, but does nothing. I was able to add several apps already (Folder Organizer), but getting stuck on the last one. Then if I hit "back" to cancel I can't long press on the screen any more until I reboot.
LG G3, Dell Venue 11 Pro, Dell Venue 8 Pro, HP TouchPad.

I use greenify and put a hibernation and turn off/lock screen shortcut. I just tap it once and apps are hibernated and screen turns off and locks. I put the shortcut in my dock bar so it's neatly out of the way

Not sure if you've already figured this out ( probably ) but the G3 TweaksBox Module has that option for you and it works quite well with Nova I can confirm.
