thanks for the offer, yes I might try it to see if my corporate Contacts/Calendar sync issue would still exist. They are breaking on KK for some reason - probably not a fault of Z1C ROMs (the same was happening on HD2). Not immediately as all work...
many thanks for the guidelines in this thread - and to TQuest for files in post #146 - rooted, TA backed up, bootloader unlocked. TQuest's JB files tested. All this to try KK and find out that for now I am happier with Sony JB ROM, plus Xposed ...
