Firmware (OTA) for carrier branded devices (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc.) in the U.S. goes through lab testing before being released. The process goes as follows:

Motorola creates the firmware and submits it to a 3rd party lab > Firmware waits in line to be tested, which can take 3+ months >

// If the firmware passes lab testing, the carrier will give the OK for Motorola to push the update (OTA)

// If the firmware doesn't pass lab testing, it gets reported and Motorola has to fix the firmware and re-submit it once again for lab testing ( Another 3+ months after being submitted for testing)

// Or the carrier can decline the firmware (For whatever reason it wants) and it never gets pushed.

One of the big reasons IMHO the firmware takes so long for 3rd party testing is because the carriers are so adamantly against rooting. By delaying the 3rd party testing it gives them plenty of time to see if there are exploits. Right now, 4.4.4 on the Moto G has a great deal to recommend it to the carriers since nobody has worked out a temproot exploit, and 4.4.4 has been out for a long time. They have very little incentive for 3rd party testing to be rushed.

If an update to pie was announced that included 4.4.3 or 4.4.4, on the Moto G, it is a completely sure bet that Verizon would be out tomorrow with Android 5 for the Moto G.

The one saving grace is that Ebay is full of Verizon Moto G's that have older Android versions on them.

OTA Lollipop is here
I received notification 2 days ago, keep postponing, I want to root my Verizon XT1028 1st gen prepaid. Don't mind if it's before or after. Saw chainfire had a simple root but again lloks like needs unlock, but looks like not for XT1028 either. Just wanted to pass that OTA lollipop is out. BTW, if anyone has come up with a cheaper way than $45 for root I'd like to know, that's more than I paid for the phone lol.

I also got the 4.4.4, 5.0 and 5.1 update just now on my XT1028. Better late than never I guess. I guess I should have pulled the ota, whoops.

Well, my prediction almost a year ago was that we would never see a VZW lollipop. Guess I was wrong... Glad we were able to make it work 8 months before them

Been on Marshmallow for weeks...which basically seems like lollipop without the bugs that plagued it from day 1.
