Can someone please explain how OTA firmware update and {'About Phone' => 'System updates'} work.

As I understand, {'About Phone' => 'System updates'} requires data connection or WiFi. Does it connect to Motorola website or carrier website?

Does OTA require data connection? Will OTA work if Mobile Data is disabled, but WiFi is enabled?

Will OTA necessarily update to exact same firmware as would {'About Phone' => 'System updates'} ?

Do I have to have an active carrier SIM-card in my Moto G to do OTA?

I have Telus (Canada) XT1032

OTA is the same thing as updating through system updates.

But the question here is does the OTA connects to the Motorola server, just like the installed Motorola PC software does?

Yes. As long as you update to an official firmware.
