No way not to.
You can keep data but not root. If your boot is unlocked, just replace the stock recovery.img with twrp or Philz keeping the name the same. Overwrite this new recovery.img in the XML folder & change the md5 to that of the custom one, in the XML file. It RSD will flash custom recovery for you.
