I'm using hangouts as my default SMS app, while I see that in the app I can see the contacts picture but when I look at the SMS via active display it doesn't show the contacts picture in the right hand corner, only a gray picture of a person. Anyone know how to fix this?

You might want to try going into SETTINGS>ACTIVE DISPLAY>SELECT APPS and check if hangouts is one of the apps selected or not. Good luck

I figured it out. For hangouts even if you have a contact picture for the person if they don't have a Google+ account with a contact picture it won't show on active display. I just went back to stock SMS because it being dependent on Google+ which is stupid.
