Some time ago there was some controvery about some of the motorola phones spying on the users in a pretty bad way. Does the moto x have these features?

There is a full list of applications that come preinstalled that can be disabled. As far as I know, it doesn't seem that Motorola do any 'spying'. Mostly carriers are the ones who install this spyware onto devices.
Do you have a Moto X and you want to root it? Use TowelPieRoot!

It could still be present & you allow it by the user agreement.
