iMessenger uses AppleID in order to exchange messages with other iPhones and, in this case, use as a group messenger.

Hangout integration with SMS copy's the same integration that iPhone made years ago with iMessenger and SMS. Since you use Google Account for Play access, G+ it's just consequence and Hangout using Google Accounts to exchange messages.

Um...yes it does. It works using MMS, switching to SMS splits up the conversation.
