Forgive me for asking this, but I couldn't find any helpful or relevant (on old SW versions or MotoMaker Moto Xs) articles or threads after scouring the internet.

As the title, states, I want to unlock the bootloader and root without having to wipe data, but Motorola states that unlocking the bootloader, which is required for root, will wipe all of my data on the phone. I took the latest 4.4.2 OTA.

So...

1. Is there a way to make a backup that I can flash back later?
2. After getting the unlock code from the Moto website and unlocking the phone, what else do I need to do to obtain root?

Thanks for helping out an Android noob!
I've been loving my Moto X ever since I got it. Its a breath of fresh air after being on Windows Phone for so long!

For rooting and unlocking, read this...read first post.

As for data, you could try helium. I've read it doesn't need root. Then transfer the backup files to your PC. If you can find them. Then transfer it back after and install helium and try to restore.

Titanium backup works this way for sure. But you need root to use it.

This may not be guaranteed. So be ready to reinstall everything anyway.

I suggest you transfer all pics, videos and anything else off the phone too.
