Probably old news but I couldn't find it on this Moto X forum:

If you want working exchange email on 4.4 do this (root required)

1) Download the above file, unzip, and copy the two apk's to your phone
2) Use root explorer to navigate to /system/app
3) Rename "Exchange2.apk" to "Exchange2_old.apk" (you'll need to rename this file back to "Exchange2.apk" to accept an OTA)
4) Rename Email.apk to "Email_old.apk" (you'll need to rename this file back to "Email.apk" to accept an OTA)
5) Paste the two apk's you downloaded into the /system/app folder
6) (optional) If you don't want 2 email services running go into Settings>Apps>All and select then Disable "Email" (version 4.4-5) and "Exchange Services" (version 4.4-5)
7) Reboot your phone

Now you can set up Exchange service without it failing to download new messages or draining your battery.

Thanks... great timing... I'm surprised how little info I can find on this. Any idea if this impacts calendar as well?

It fixes the exchange sync issue, so if you were having calendar problems they should be resolved with this.

I know this is an old thread but I'm wondering if the apks are still avaliable somewhere, the Drive folder in the link is empty.

I'm having exchange issues on 4.4.2 and have tried com.google.android.gm.exchange-6.5-1791555-500065-minAPI19.apk from a different source but Exchange Services keeps crashing and my emails aren't syncing.

Unfortunately I'm running Funtouch OS 2.0 (4.4.2) on a Vivo Xshot and it doesn't look like I'll be getting an updated version of Android any time soon, if ever.
