Noob question, can I flash the ota zip with twrp? My Nexus has a very temperamental USB socket a d fastboot just didn't work.

TWRP lacks the official build fingerprint of stock ROM that stock recovery has. Lollipop OTAs now check for this and will fail if it's not a match. It just occured to me it would be cool if TWRP could have an OTA "masquerade" mode where it reports the fingerprint property from the ROM to pass this assert. It would no doubt come in handy on many devices.

That means I'll have to wait for a stock rooted zip or go the custom ROM way since my USB connection is unreliable.

And, just to be sure, I can't flash the system.img file either in twrp, right?

You mean, load some properties from system/build.prop to override those in the TWRP ramdisk? Technically that can be done. If a ROM is even installed.

However, I don't know enough about all the different Android devices to say if this is a good idea or not. Officially, TWRP doesn't support flashing OTAs (source: http://twrp.me/faq/officialota.html). Also, on new devices with image-based system partition updates, even the fact that TWRP mounts /system (rw) at startup already destroys update compatibility - this needs to change anyway.

Odd, my mom's N7 just got this and it still says 5.1 in the update dialog, but sure enough 5.1.1 after the upgrade.

It means the OTA is imminent, though. If anyone gets the OTA, please capture the URL before updating!

I am on LMY47O and just received an OTA of LMY47V (Android 5.1.1) . But I m rooted and using TWRP recovery. How can I updated to Android 5.1.1

Nexus 7 LTE (razorg/deb)
Stock 5.1 with TWRP recovery and root access.

Nexus 7 LTE (razorg/deb)
Stock 5.1 with TWRP recovery and root access.

Flash stock recovery.img (and boot.img if you're using a custom kernel) using fastboot and move /system/bin/install-recovery_original.sh back to install-recovery.sh, then the OTA should flash successfully. You could then flash the latest TWRP .img for your device via fastboot and root with the latest SuperSU .zip again.

hello need some advice, I'm on stock 5.1 stock recovery and all and the ota fails to update. error reads 'error in cache' what's the deal?

Sadly , Google still did not fix the bad 3D performance that Nexus 7 2013 suffers from, on Lollipop, on resource hungry games.
