So, my phone is stuck on the google logo screen, with a padlock icon on bottom.

I'm attempting to flash firmware version 4.2, so I go into download mode, get it to recognize in Odin, and then a moment after i hit "start", Odin encounters and error and crashes.

Thoughts?

I also tried using Nexus Tool Kit, but apparently the flashboot wasn't working correctly. any thoughts on how to fix this?

Can you boot into bootloader (fastboot) mode? Power off, press power-on while holding Vol-Up.

If so, try install Google factory image and root.

Is the padlock locked or unlocked? If it is locked you need to unlock the bootloader. You need to use fastboot command to do that.

fastboot oem unlock

Also, there is really never any reason to use Odin with a Nexus device...
