Related threads I found are old, for other devices, or have additional issues.

Using CM11, Philz Recovery.

I'm looking for current information on booting a temporary, rooted TouchWiz ROM from the external SD card that won't overwrite the current installed ROM; to be used for updating PRL, GPS, etc...

It would be great if there is a solution using my current recovery, but only a wish. I really miss having this utility from previous phones. Nandroiding to flashing and back is tedious.

The devil kernel has a function like this, dual boot, but it works for some and for some others it doesn't, works with aosp roms 4.4.* and TouchWiz 4.3 check it in the original development thread

Devil works best with aosp 4.3 and up. If you want a tw 4.3 it will work. You need to use devil kernel for both roms and use the devil recovery I modifed for our device. In the devil recovery you must enable selinux under backup restore.. advanced (I think) so your nands will work. All backups are done in cwm format only. If you need more info or help with devil just ask.
