Honestly I don't think it's needed anymore. I know that I didn't do it and gonk built fine.

Do you get any errors? I would try to build gonk and see if it goes well first.

edit : Anyway, you need to edit the file at ~/.bashrc and find the line "export PATH=..." if it's not there you can add it to the end. you should write "export PATH=$PATH:/new/path/to/adb" You will need to logout and login. In a console, you can write $PATH and you should see the path to adb you just wrote and you should be able to write "adb" in a console anywhere and get the help menu.
