Keymonk is a multi-touch sliding replacement keyboard for Android developed by Nirai. There is a free and a paid version, available in the Play Store. Nirai is active on this thread, so feel free to post feedback, feature requests and bugs on this XDA thread.
Also, as a general note, Nirai's intention is to keep the keyboard slim with a low memory footprint. This means finding a happy ground between lots of features & keeping it simple.
Q: What's the difference between the free and paid versions?
A: The paid version lets you save custom words to the dictionary. You can hide the suggestion bar. Autospace features. You also get to support the dev for his hard work.
Q: Why is the caps key on the bottom row & the i
key where you would expect caps to be?
A: In Keymonk you can sweep from ?123 to ALT and then to a character in the ALT layout, so you do not want to touch the ALT by mistake, and therefore its natural position is next to the ?123 key and not above it.
Phil's Note - there is still discussion from users that would like a change, so write up your opinion & solutions in the thread.
Q: How do I access symbols?
A: You can tap on the ?123 key, then access symbols (including the ALT symbols), the tap ABC to return to the normal keyboard. You can also tap & hold on the ?123 key, slide to the symbol you want (with either thumb) then release. Keymonk will automatically go back to the ABC layout.
Also: You can click & hold on the . key to get to other symbols , " ? ' ! You can also quickly slide from the . key in five directions to get those symbols (you don't have to hold & press)
Q: How to I combine two words into one longer one (ie concatenate words)?
A: You can use Shift-Space to combine two words into one word without a space. For example, to write Firefox:
Q: How can I re-size the keyboard?
A: Keymonk currently has 3 sizes. To toggle to the next size, hold down the Enter key.
Q: How can I hide the suggestion bar?
A: Click the i
key, and go to Modify Settings. Uncheck the Hide Candidates checkbox.
Q: If I have the suggestion bar hidden, and I make a mistake, how can I see the candidate words?
A: Hit the delete key after sliding a word to temporarily bring up the suggestion bar.
Q: Can I toggle the sounds/vibration?
A: Click the i
key, and go to Modify Settings. Checkboxes for Beep & Vibrate are there. Note, you can't change the duration of the vibrate nor the volume of the beep.
Q: What languages are currently supported?
A: English, Deutsch/German, Espanol/Spanish, Francais/French, Hebrew, Italiano/Italian. If you would like additional languages, post in the thread or contact Nirai.
Q: How much can you miss a letter and still have Keymonk consider it in it's possible mistakes?
A: Imagine, if keys were squarish, a circle with a diameter twice the width of a key.
Q: Can I delete the last word I typed quickly?
A: Slide left on the backspace key to delete the last word.
Q: My fingers keep bumping in the middle, what can I do?
A: You do not have to keep both fingers on the screen to finish a word. As long as one finger is down, you can continue to slide out a word. If one finger is in the way, lift it off the screen.
Q: Why doesn't sliding work in Chrome?
A: Chrome is too buggy at this time, and Keymonk is intentionally disabled for in it.
Q: Sometimes I have a problem when I type a 1-2 letter word & it gets combined with the next word.
A: Keymonk lets you start a word with taps and finish it with sweeps. You can input a two letter word without the need for a Space key if you finish it with two fingers on screen.
For example to input "is that"
1) With right finger tap and hold I
2) With left finger tap and hold S
3) Release both keys (after minimum 1/8th second hold)
4) Sweep THAT
Q: How do I do emoticons?
A: Long press the enter key. You can even swipe to it like on the period key making a quick up gesture for the standard
Q: What's the easiest way to handle email names now?
A: Save the username as a saved word. Save the domain as a saved word. Then you can sweep 'username' + @ + 'domain'
Sometimes the word swiped after Shift-Space (the latter being correctly swiped/tapped!!) still starts with a cap.
If I start a new sentence it will capitalize my word, but if I delete the word and start the sentence again, the first word is no longer capitalized.
Keyboard shortcuts/macros. For example:
M = Matthew
n = and
idk - I don't know
Split keyboard option
A way to block words from the suggestions so they never show again
Shortcuts for Select All, Copy, cut, Paste, possibly by tracing from i
to A, C, X, V. Another possibility is to click the i
key to get a menu with cut/copy/paste.
Option to turn off curse words (custom curse dictionary? Would the problem be solved with the block word feature request?)
Option to hide the current language from the spacebar, especially when only one language is used.
In the Spanish keyboard layout, have the ñ as a separate key to the right of the l.
This is under discussion, please post your comments to the thread
Add arrow up & down keys to go with the left and right keys.
Theme to make the letters have a stronger "button" look with lines around the letters and spaces between them.
Language requests for: Swedish, Dutch, South-East Asian, Polish, Slovak
Theme request for a light skin layout
Change the exclamation mark to a down-swipe on the punctuation key
Allow user to change color of font of letters (ideally to anything via color picker, or sliders or hex picker). Also allow color selection of background, lines between letters.
Allow setting for how long the trace line stays on the screen until it starts disappearing.
When typing three points (...) it should default to lowercase, instead of caps, as most of the times I would like to continue the sentence, not start a new one.
Add an option for mixed languages?
Ability to learn words from SMS/Twitter/Facebook & add to user dictionary.
Things Corrected/Completed Features:
Layout request for Dvorak
Change clicking shift after a word so caps order depends on what the case was when you started
Switch the ' and " keys to make sliding on the ' (more frequent symbol) easier
Modify accidental word/letter deletion when user is aiming for M and gets the backspace key instead.
If you see mistakes or have additions, please PM me, or write on this thread. Note, I'm just a fan of the keyboard doing my little part to try & help. I am not the dev, nor do I speak for him.
