You did not get drop call on the MI3 modem? why not use the MJ4 file?
See here for the MJ4 full stock. What version of Odin are you using? I have found that the v1.85 and v3.09 works best. See here for more Odin versions If you still choose to use the MI3 tar make sure that you are using the PDA or AP slot and that "re-partition" is off.

My screen now says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.

What firmware where you before trying to flash the MI3 firmware?
