The bootloader is locked as you should have probably heard by now and Asus hasn't released the unlock tool yet. That's pretty much the major reason why development hasn't started going any further yet, since the bootloader was locked for the sake of making it less likely to hard-brick our phones so early. But if you can't wait, then I advise you not bother hanging around here if all you care for is easy and fast development.
It's clear that the device didn't meet your high expectations and clearly favor the OPO for currently good reasons. However, it can't be denied that with how new Asus is to the smartphone game, they're at least trying to address the issues we face with their OTA updates and Zentalk forums. Last time I heard, Cyanogen broke their ties with OnePlus, but I don't see anyone mentioning this as often.
It's just the initial release, and EVEN THE OPO had its own initial bugs that got fixed over time. Generally speaking, it's really, really unfair for persons to be comparing OPO that's definitely geared towards power users and devs, using CM as the base OS, against the Zenfone 2 which is being geared towards everyone, both casual and power users alike.
The Intel SoC also doesn't have as much dev coverage as QC, which is why we'd take a bit more time to get started. So bottom line is you and many others are comparing apples to oranges here, where the only real things to compare are the price and performance. Anyways, it's all your choice at the end and that's okay, but what's not okay is when you bash other devices without trying to understand them or their brand's efforts to help.
