On this page (sorry i can't post links because i'm new but it's on gizmodo) we can read that Samsung have found the problem. It seems that MTP application crash when there are files with more than 16 characters extension and say that is very rare.
That's why when you format internal SD card, it fixes the bug.
But when you look at the SD contents on your computer,you can see some folders beginning whith (.) like .downloadtemp.
I'm don't know very well linux systems but i know it's used for hiding files/folders. But in windows systems it's just an extension.
When an app create a hide folder to store settings it may corrupt the link with MTP Application which crashes...and windows can't install drivers
What do you think about this theory (i can't test now, i'm at work) ?
