i just got the phone and upgraded OTA to kit kat. Now i want to unlock the bootloader. Would unlocking the bootloader remove kit kat and put the phone back to the default 4.3 OS?

From what I understand yes you will lose KitKat as bootloader unlocking wipes the data from your device.

To remedy this you need to create a back up, or start afresh and reinstall KitKat.

Unlocking the BL usualy only wipes all user data and not sytem data, can`t imagine it works different on the Moto G.

Unlocking your bootloader will not restore the phone to 4.3, it will remain on Kit Kat. You will however loose all user data such as apps, texts, contacts etc.
