tried rooting getting following messages. Tried different cables, different usb ports, restarted both laptop and phone...Verizon galaxy note 2 running OTA 4.3. Using windows 7 laptop.

What is the build number of your device? Go in the dialer en type *#1234# (or something like that) and tell what is says. Maybe your software is not supported as samsung has patched it on some versions.
