ota (over the air update), and this one is factory image. I always like to flash rooted factory image, but they all work your choice really.

Nothing ... all are the same, the last is a simply OTA update !!!

in CWM, Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe data-dalvik. Do it twice just to be sure. Instll the rom.

Considering sdcards are not mountable currently via CWM, will we have issues restoring backups?

The sdcard is actually mounted as drive 0 when you're in recovery trying to flash the zip

I am running the 4.1.2 deodexed stock version that came out right before this..can I just apply this as an update without factory reset? Instructions on previous posts for ICS and 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 were OK to upgrade without wipe.

Thanks I get that but my question is if CWM would recognize older backups from that sdcard after flashing? in case you want to revert to something else.

No you won't be able to do that, Koush is working for a fix. This is due to multi user framework of the 4.2 ROM.
