I got me one of those nokia chargers as well, but you guys would be so jealous if you found out the amount i paid for it :p:p. It works fairly well with the nexus 4 but it seems to go in and out of charge for like the first 3 minutes of when you set it up and then it sticks perfectly till the end of your charging period. Glad i got this, works perfectly with my diztronic matte black case, perfect combination.

Yea, thats the downside. The stand charger costs around $70......

I am an owner of both devices and I can confirm that the charging works only when the device is centered and the bottom of the device is 1/4 to 1/2 inch higher than the bottom of the charger. If you can put it about at that spot, it won't cycle any longer.

Cheers

I bought one of the DT-910 Nokia stand chargers, and I can confirm that this is accurate. In fact, I notice that in the last few posts/screenshots, people who claim it works fine seem to all have cases.

The issue appears to be that if the bottom(where the charging plate) of the phone is flush against the stand, then it cycles like crazy. If the charging plates are separate by a small amount(1/4 inch or so) then the cycling stops. The easiest way to consistently achieve this is simply to buy a case so that the plastic of the case is between your Nexus 4 and the charging stand.

I'm not sure how this squares with the reports that the Nokia doesn't have enough current to charge the Nexus 4 properly. If anything, moving the phone away from the charging plate seems like it would DECREASE the current output.

I am curious to hear reports of how well people's phones charge once they've done this and stopped the cycling.

assuming that there has to be a small distance between the charger and the phone to make it charge wirelessly, would it be safe to say that the nokia fatboy would work? (i.e the pillow charger, basically just a pillow covering the DT-900) ...

since people have been reporting that the has to be a slight distance for the nexus to charge, Im guessing that the reason a naked nexus could not charge and the nokia can has to do with the thickness of the phone...well, the lumia 920 is slightly thicker than the nexus...at least when I held it in my hands it felt that way (in MS store)...

I am going to go ahead and bit the bullet.. I can score the nokia charger for $30. I have the bumper on the phone now, but also have a rearth case. If the extra distance trick doesnt work then i will just ship it back. So I should be able to definitely confirm or deny this. Hopefully it ships soon.

I don't know if I would be jealous as I was able to snag a free one.

My initial testing with the Nokia wireless charger is a bust. I have tried all the tips and suggestions (using a cloth, or other material in between, even borrowed ideas from the Uniden thread) (NFC off or on does not make a difference).

I thought i was in for a success. I got it out of the package last night, and of course placing it directly on there caused the cycling issue. So i tried several different types of material, cloth, my rearth case, etc.. What finally stopped the cycling problem is that i have a second Rearth case (the first batch defective one) and i used this to cover the wireless charger, placed the phone on it with the top of the phone (not the USB port end) hanging about a half inch over the back of the charger (the plug in side). I had no cycling and within a half hour it went from 68% to 74%.

But i was not going to call this a success yet. I set it by my bed, laid it down on the charger and according to appearances it showed to be charging. About 5 hours later i was woken by a phone call. I missed the call and was unable to turn on the screen (phone was not unusually hot, nothing seemed abnormal). I held down the power button and it rebooted. Upon reboot i was at 54% battery. So without some kind of mods I would call this confirmed busted. Do not buy.

I will perform more tests this week when i am at the office so i can actually watch it and see whats going with it.

Since this thing cost me less than $30 shipped, i will keep it regardless. So after i perform all of my testing as a stock unit, i will try to mod it to see what may or may not work. Something i really want to try is to hack in a different power supply. The one provided only outputs .75A. They use a stupid cable between the power supply and the pad. wish they would have used a d@mn micro usb cord. But i wont know whats feasible yet until i am done testing.

So before i make any mods to this later, is there any specific testing that anyone wants me to try besides what i have already mentioned above?

Things already tested:

  • Case vs No case (Rearth and Bumper)
  • couple of business cards between the phone and pad
  • placed bottom side on metal and non metal surface
  • NFC on and Off
  • Cloth in between phone and pad

Tests Planned (pre modification)

  • bringing to my office so i can watch the charge cycles all day
  • Charge with phone off (i did turn my phone off this morning and did notice it started to charge while off, i did not have time to let it sit though)
I should add though that a Qi charger should not require any work and should just work right out of the box. I am only continuing my testing because i plan on keeping it regardless, and others may be able to get these cheap enough to justify a little hacking to make work.

Just got the n4 today. My Nokia wireless charger works fine.
You can buy it at Att or Verizon or Tmobile I'm guessing.

Is possible to flip the standing Nokia charger and use a pillow over it to charge ?
If its possible then stand / pillow will be a great combination so that I can switch between those .

I'm not sure I would use a pillow. That would more than likely trap a bunch of heat and cook your battery. I would try something thin or something that will dissipate heat easily.

I am going to try the same thing. Unfortunately, the only power supply I have with the same size tip is 5v but it does provide more amperage. :(

Do you know the polarity of the the tip? Or the dimensions of the tip? I thought I would try to pick something up at Frys or bastardize an existing power brick.

Btw, my charger works sometimes but I haven't been able to find a pattern as to why and why it does not work. Also have not had it charge past 96% but it did get to 96%.

I'm not sure on the polarity, but I'll hack mine up. I would actually prefer to have a USB type plug on it, this way I don't have lug different chargers if I'm traveling. So I'll test it when I cut it.

So here is something interesting. As you can see in my post above, i popped the cover off the pad. So i wondered to myself, what would happen if i just place the phone directly on the coils. Now i should mention that i still have my Rearth case on the phone. But oddly enough it stopped cycling. My phone was 90% and did not charge, but it did stop cycling. I will have to research this further.

Any update on your testing? I was able to snag the DT-910 (stand) for $50 with my FAN account at AT&T. I bought the stand specifically because of the angle (I wanted something to prop my phone up) and also for the NFC. If I can't charge with NFC on, then it's pointless.

Also, I can't seem to get the NFC tag to read on my Nexus 4 (works great on my Lumia 920, of course). Figured I might just need an app or something to read/write the tag? I'm completely new to NFC so I'm clueless here.

The whole holiday stuff kind of sidelined my testing. But I'll hopefully resume tomorrow... I wanted the stand but it's been backordered on premier.
Is there an NFC built in to the stand?

Yeah I was able to find one at my local store and got the manager to give me the Premier discount (apparently that's supposed to be online-only if you don't have an active AT&T account. Whatever).

It does have NFC built into the base. When I tap my Lumia 920 to it, it launches the Nokia Accessories app, which allows me to choose an app to launch with the NFC. I can't get it to recognize with the Nexus 4 at all.

However, I already sold this thing - have a buddy with a Lumia 920, so this way he gets the stand that's sold out everywhere, and I don't have to hassle with the return. I can get the ugly Energizer pad for roughly the same price anyways.

The standing one is impossible to find so most are trying with the flat charger from the looks of it.

While I was out last night, I passed a Verizon store and said " what the Hell", went in and purchased one asking multiple times about the return policy knowing full and well it probably wouldn't work and knowing I'd be back down the next day to return it.

I tested this over night and all this morning. With much finessing, I was able to get the charging/not charging cycling to stop. Got it to show " charging" without interruption but...

IT DOES NOT ACTUALLY CHARGE THE BATTERY! I'M ACTUALLY LOOSING BATTERY %!!!

Everything indicates that it's charging, on screen and in the Battery settings BUT MY BATTERY % IS GOING DOWN! It's gone from 94% to 83% all while saying it's charging!!

Note: I have NFC turned OFF, Airplane mode, all wireless radios and cellular OFF. EVERYTHING OFF EXCEPT THE SCREEN TO TAKE SCREENSHOTS. Yet still the battery is DISCHARGING while displaying that it's charging.

Also note, that I tried a mouse pad, several microfiber cloths, even folded napkins of varying thicknesses, still losing battery and not actually charging my Nexus 4 even with every other indication that it should be!

This is a complete mess. I'm done playing Nokia Qi charging games. IT DOES NOT WORK. No one has provided video proof of charging and battery percent actually going up. All state that there is charging/not charging cycling to whatever degree.

I am providing picture proof that it does NOT charge even if you manage to get past the insane charging/not charging cycling to a steady charging stat with all radios off including NFC using a myriad of things including mouse pads, microfiber cloths, napkins, naked back glass of the N4 and an N4 with a back screen protector. Nothing can get this thing to actually CHARGE.

DO NOT BUY NOKIA WIRELESS CHARGERS. THEY DO NOT WORK!

Until someone can provide video proof showing without a doubt that the battery percent is actually GOING UP, don't buy this thing.

    amperage too low?

I'm hardly an engineer, but the specs say the DT-900 is only 300ma. Maybe that's causing the problem with the N4.

Guys, it very may work for Droidz, if you read The Verge's report you will notice that the charging issue seems to not affect ALL Nexus 4's, read below is an excerpt from The Verge's article

""The Nexus 4 and the Nokia DT-900 are supposed to properly work together," says Menno Treffers, chairman of the Wireless Power Consortium. Indeed, not everyone is having trouble pairing the Nexus 4 to the DT-900: Engadget reported success, for instance. But a single bad experience instills doubt in a standard that needs as much traction as it can get early on in the game."

I don't see why it shouldn't work, it's based on the QI standard which should be compatible.

are people using the standing one or the lay flat version of the charger.
