Odin: Return to Stock, fix soft brick
Sponsored by k0nane.info. Have you tipped your devs today?

DO NOT CHECK REPARTITION! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Why the big red warning? Far too many people have broken their devices by not following these instructions! Search the forums, or drop by IRC - you'll see plenty of examples.

These instructions should fix your soft-bricked or broken phone as long as you can get it into download mode. Make sure you have drivers already installed on your Windows computer before starting. Please read them all the way through and then begin.

Code:
#include <external/cyanogenmod/std_disclaimer.h>
/*
 * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
 * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
 * do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
 * before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
 * you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
 */

Instructions
  1. Download Odin 1.85 - see section below.
  2. Download the stock TAR for your device - see section below.
  3. Extract the contents of odin-185.zip and the 7zip archive.
  4. Run Odin 1.85.exe, and prepare Odin:
    • Check "auto-reboot", and uncheck all other options.
    • Click PDA and select the TAR you downloaded.
  5. Put your device into Download Mode:
    • Connect the USB cable to your PC, but NOT your device.
    • Remove the battery.
    • Reinsert the battery.
    • Hold down Volume Up and Volume Down keys. (NOTE: It may be just Vol Down. Try that first!)
    • Insert the USB cable into your device.
  6. You should now be at Download Mode. Click Start in Odin.

That's it! Your device will autoreboot, and your phone should be working properly again.

Forgive me for being a n00b with Samsung stuff. If we just
dd if=/dev/block/*partition* of=/sdcard/boot.img
dd if=/dev/block/*partition* of=/sdcard/system.img
dd if=/dev/block/*partition* of=/sdcard/recovery.img

with the correct partitions, then throw that in a tar, we can make a ROM Odin flashable?

You bet, that's what I did. FYI, boot.img = mmcblock0p8, recovery.img = mmcblk0p22, system.img = mmcblk0p24

I use ODIN on a regular basis for flashing Infuse, Captivate and SGS IIs.

I followed the directions exactly as written and my flash error's out when writing the system.img file. My download count is now 2 and I have the magic yellow triangle. Not good.

Going to have to try an alternate route. . .

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ update
Totally bricked now - doesn't even turn on. First Galaxy I've had this happen. Not sure I like this phone - not very robust. Going back later today. . .

I had the same issue.

I ended up downloading the CWR flash that you can flash with Odin (link http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1340526), and flashed it. Worked fine and got me back to where I was prior to trying to go back to stock. The rom I currently have isn't the best, but at least the phone isn't bricked. Something definitely wrong with the rom, or with the process.

PS - If you can't get into DL mode anymore, remove the battery for at least 15 minutes, re-insert, and then do the DL mode steps again.

Strange that the system.img didn't work - I'm going to run some tests on IRC today with another dump and see what I can get. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Another stock user would be helpful.

    Oh it works, but it increases the counter and in download mode is indicated as Custom. The one from Sammobile.com does not increase the counter and is indicated as Samsung Official when you go into download mode.

    Yes, that is exactly what I was saying - the 'official' TARs overwrite the SBLs and thus do not trigger the counter.

    Look here for flash counter reset... thank Vincom for posting in his thread... Also thank Envy Diz for putting it together... and thank k0nane for THIS post... LOL I hope I got everybody...

    http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1575712

    Just don't use the konane tar and it won't increment the counter.
