Except there was a notice posted of what the 'changes' were going to be, and you didn't even update the OS to 4.4.3 or whatever.
Sigh... there are so many notices to say nothing of some people having other demands on their lives than nearly memorizing multiple forums' posts... talk about low S/N ratio....

It was the kernel, and yes, developed by VZW to squash Towelroot, but it failed, because you can still keep root with the new 'OTA'.. There's a couple threads on it around here.

"Keep root" meaning towelroot rooting or the NGC NE9 ODIN dance or something different? There are far too many competing sources of "notices". See above re: low S/N ratios.

Yep, IMO it's irresponsible to recommend doing an OTA after tw...
Having the same bad Council here.
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?p=54696303

They gonna be there to fix the mess?
No.. Nor do they care.... That's bannable stuff!

Please show me where I recommended taking the OTA. All I did was answer his questions about the OTA breaking root and confirmed there is a workaround to reroot with towelroot. I then suggested he thank muniz_ri for his work. Whether or not he decides to accept the OTA is entirely up to him. There may be things in the OTA that are important to him. Or he may not want to go through the process of freezing sdm 1.0. I agree that people who want to root and ROM should not take OTAs, but it's entirely his choice what he does or does not do with his phone. And you think I should be banned for that?

Geohot will not be releasing any further updates. He is now working for Google to find and patch these and other exploits in not just Android code, but anything computer based that touches the internet.

You really need to explain, the next guy will read your post and think it's safe but the next ota won't miss.

I'm not sure who the above was intended for but...

1) Installed towelroot in mid-June

2) VZW pushes a big OTA upgrade. (late June or sometime in early July).

3) Installed OTA for the upgrade.

4) Reinstalled towelroot successfully.

5) VZW pushes The OTA That Broke Towelroot

6) Dumb call: remembering 3&4 above, I took TOTBT.

7) Bang head on wall repeatedly.

OK, that's what I did. If anyone else did that, I sure didn't say do it. And I damn sure am not saying it now!

What has me puzzled is:
windstrings said:

Is there a way to use towelroot again with TOTBT? I really think I'm indulging in wishful thinking but...

I just meant dodging a bullet once means in the game of Russian roulette now the odds are higher you won't the next time... Meaning the more time that passes after can exploit is found, the more likely the patches will catch up and be released.

This far down the road from TR being released "or rather finding the exploit" it's next to suicide "Russian roulette" to keep trying ota updates.

Any benifits gained are gone if you now have to go backwards and learn how to root the old fashioned way because that update is gone too "to get back where you can root again".

We are not good stewards to just haphazardly say go ahead and do an OTA update unless we know they are not a novice..... But 9 times out if 10 they are a novice or they wouldn't even be asking such a basic question. ?

I see your point and, had I screwed my head on straight, would have waited on the latest OTA for the reasons you cite.

Um, being pedantic, the only time the odds in Russian Roulette change is when the round goes off. Otherwise, assuming a six-shot cylinder, the odds remain 1 in 6 you won't survive your turn even after 5 spins of the cylinder. Once the gun goes off, odds improve to 0 in 6 you'll lose. Unless it's spin once, I pull the trigger, you pull the trigger and repeat, with a double action revolver. The odds change with every pull of the trigger. But you knew that... ;)

Read back in the thread a few pages - 1) GeoHot works for Google now. Hired to find and close exploits like the one towelroot used to root devices; 2) towelroot used a specific vulnerability in kernels dated before June 3. If your kernel is dated after June 3, the vulnerability has been patched and there is nothing GeoHot can "fix" to make towelroot work on your device; and related to that 3) either your phone has the vulnerability or it doesn't and towelroot either works to root your device or it doesn't and there is nothing GeoHot can do to fix towelroot to make it work for your device. Plus, like I said before GeoHot works for Google now so he can't create programs or apps that root phones by exploiting vulnerabilities he is supposed to now be fixing. Now that this same question has been answered for the 1,000,000th time in this thread, can we please get it closed?

That's a question that is probably best asked in the T-Mobile note 3 section. You have a much better chance of getting an answer to your question there than here in the Verizon S5 section.

v3 is live! More support. Reboot on your own time. modstrings

    What's a modstring?
A way to support your obscure phone!
Since I don't own every phone, you can fix it yourself
    http://towelroot.com/modstrings.html
And modstrings have their first success!
    On LG L34C use "1337 0 0 0 4 0"
Eventually the server will push these if people find enough

Still no real HTC/Moto support from phones without writable system.
If someone is willing to give me one of these phones for testing I'll add good support.
    Same deal for Exynos.

    Killed bugs:
Note 3 with kernel 3.4.0-722276 is FIXED! Redownload.
Fixed Note 3 with kernel 3.4.0-636608 thanks to analytics.
Download failed issue should be fixed.

    Known bugs:
Note 3 with kernel 3.4.0-257432 doesn't seem to work. Updating to 722276 should fix.
Newest Moto and HTC don't currently work because /system is write protected.
Detected as Andr.Exploit.Ratc by some virus scanners. It is an Android exploit. Will not fix.

    Does it trip KNOX?
Most probably not. My phone says "KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0x0", but no promises.

What's the hash of the apk file?
    towelroot.com has https now!
People having DNS issues should clear their cache.

    Will this brick my phone?
Most probably not. towelroot alone hasn't bricked a phone yet.
The stupid decisions you make once you have root are all your own however.

    Rooting 101

This thread is full of repeated questions with incorrect or incomplete answers about rooting. Let's try to answer some of those.

Can I flash TWRP, CWM, custom Recovery, etc after Towelroot?
No, unless your phone has an unlocked bootloader. If you have a locked bootloader, you can't flash a custom ROM or custom kernel other than by use of things like Safestrap.

My phone says "Custom" and an open padlock on boot!! Oh wow, is it now unlocked????
Sorry, no. The "Custom" indication means that the phone has been modified, which is detected by a program that runs periodically looking for changed files. If you bring in your phone to the carrier with "Custom" showing, they may refuse warranty. To recover that, flash a factory stock ROM, boot, then wait for an hour or two. No, that padlock doesn't indicate anything other than

    How do I un-root?
Undo anything you've done first. For example, defrost frozen apps, reinstall things you deleted, uninstall Xposed, etc. Then, once you're back to stock, open SuperSU and use the "Full Unroot" option under settings. If you don't remember what you changed, or didn't keep the files around, then you'll need to re-flash factory stock.

    What about Knox?
First, no, this does not "trip Knox", which is slang for "Set the Knox Warranty Void flag." (Saying "trip knox" is incorrect but commonly used.)
Knox is a security program that Samsung uses to market their phones to corporates. There's a Knox-enabled bootloader as part of that program. That Bootloader detects attempts to flash a custom kernel and when it sees you try, it blows an e-Fuse that remembers that, which shows up as the Knox Warranty Void flag. The Knox bootloader refuses to allow custom recovery to be flashed as well. Currently, there's no way to bypass that other than the Loki exploit.

Since Towelroot doesn't flash a custom kernel or custom recovery, it will not set the Knox Warranty Void flag.
Other parts of the Knox program care about the Knox Warranty Void flag - for example, the Knox Secure Container Service, which can be used to hold encrypted corporate data. The other part of the Knox program is the security enforcement on the phone. That Knox enforcement kills programs that try to use root permissions. That's what SuperSU is talking about when it offers to "Disable Knox".
The Secure Container service will not run on a phone with the Knox Warranty Void flag set. That's the only thing "tripping knox" does, to disable the containers. So far there's no evidence that this is used by carriers to reject warranty service.

Do I really need SuperSU installed?
Yes, absolutely. Without it, any program wanting root will get it, which means that the "My Verizon Mobile" spyware will be granted root and will report your phone to Verizon as being rooted. You do not want this, as it's a sure means for VZ to reject warranty claims. Install SuperSU 1.99 from the OP.so you can block that sort of application from ratting you out.
