Ok, so I have in my possession what appears to be either a clone, knock off, or generic version of a Samsung Note. The sticker in the battery compartment says it is a model SM-N900W (Note3). However, when I enter the IMEI number at IMEI.info it says it is a model N7100 (Note II).

From IMEI.info:

Model: N7100 Galaxy Note II

Brand: SAMSUNG

IMEI: TAC: 355808 FAC: 02 SNR: 690184 CD: 0
Basic information:
Device type:phone

Released:2012 r.
SIM card size:Micro Sim
GSM:850 900 1800 1900
HSDPA:850 900 1900 2100
Dimensions (H/L/W):151.1 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm, vol. 114 cm³
Display:SUPER AMOLED Color (16M) 720x1280px (5.5")
Touch screen:
Weight:180 g
Time GSM (talk/stand-by):19 / 600 hrs. (25.0d)
Time UMTS (talk/stand-by):12 / 550 hrs. (22.9d)
Battery:Li-Ion 3100 mAh
Built-in memory:32768 MB
Memory card:MicroSD max. 64 GB
RAM Memory:2048 MB
OS:Android 4.1
CPU type:Samsung Exynos 4412
CPU freq.:1600.0 MHz
QWERTY keyboard:

The hardware appears to be a Note II but the software is clearly not Samsung and the S-Pen is just a capacitive stylus. I would like to flash an actual Samsung ROM but have tried both of those model numbers using Odin3 but have been unsuccessful:

<OSM> Enter CS for MD5..
<OSM> Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
<OSM> Please wait..
<OSM> CF-Auto-Root-ha3g-ha3gxx-smn900.tar.md5 is valid.
<OSM> Checking MD5 finished Sucessfully..
<OSM> Leave CS..
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 0)

Part of the problem is that when I enter recovery mode, the options are in Chinese and I have no idea what to choose.

Sunny Chesterfield!
Have you tried flashing a custom recovery? That would make it english. Bear in mind though if this isnt a genuine sammy device flashing anything not meant for it could result in bricking

No, I only tried the two stock Roms I mentioned. Which custom recovery should I try first?

I'll install Kies as well and see if that tells me anything new.

So can a clone be flashed with an actual Samsung ROM and if so, which one would I use?

So no Samsung ROMs will work, but how do I at least get rid of the Chinese in the recovery screen?

Thank You!

This looks promising! I will give it a try. Thank you for finding that, I searched all day yesterday and didn't find anything remotely close! I'll let you know what happens...

Step 1 complete

Ok, using the Root Genius tool suggested on NeedRom . com I was able to root the device. That was easy. Now then, the site says to download an .img file and says it is "recovery for STAR N900W based on SM-N900HA 20131108 . install the recovery with mobile uncle tools."

I installed Mobile Uncle and flashed the recovery img. The img from NeedRom.com was pretty much stock though. I'm gonna try another one the have on that site that purports to be based on the Samsung Note 3 img. We'll see...
