so you think the stock with the touch is better than the one from the OG Epic? Serious question, I honestly have not tried, you think its better quality than the old one? I just use this old BBerry cable thats as thick as a Cat6... never failed...

do people really use the stock cable? With the OG epic we tossed it or ONLY used for charging... it caused so many issues with Odin flashing.
I've always just used the Samsung usb cable. Only thing is when I use autoroot I have to jiggle the end around for it to catch it, but then it takes off.. :sly:

Blackberry cable is awsome, thats the one I use now. Also the stock touch cable has never failed me with odin either. All I know is when I had the og epic, that cable caused me loads of issues.

So I heimdalled boot.img from the AOKP 31 build. Now I have FD02 kernel. Seems a little snappier.
Anyone know whether I can access the video camera fixes? I don't have any idea what files I need or if it's even possible. Tried pushing /system/lib/hw/* as well as /system/app/Camera.apk (wiped caches and rebooted) but it still fails.

Edit: Found /system/lib/libcamera_client.so and libcameraservice.so. Pushed, chmodded, wiped caches, rebooted. Still no go.

Looks like this needs to be (and has been maybe?) fixed in source. CNA / android_device_samsung_galaxys2

Wish I knew how to program. Le sigh.

Wow, thanks Erick. Really appreciate that. I'm off to bed for more but will resume hacking first thing when I get to work in the morning :D

If you honestly want to learn programming, as I'm trying to as well...

Friend of mine said learn Python first because of its ease then from there move on to Java then pick your destiny. He pointed me to a great open source textbook for python which is linked at bottom of post... if you have any questions, pm me and I'll help any way I can

Sorry for the off-topic, just thought a few starters might find this helpful.

Yeah, right! So close having pushed everything except the *stagefright* and omx stuff. Doing that right now.

EDIT: /system/lib/libmediaservice.so was missing too so the ui wouldn't load. Slight pucker moment but the phone was responding to adb just fine so I pushed it and lo and behold the ui loaded without even having to reboot.
Video camera still failing, but I'm closer I think! Using all these files from the AOKP 31 zip.

Still failing. Pushed a bunch of stuff from the AOKP ROM but /system/bin/mediaserver (yes, I pushed that too) keeps dying. It's late, I'm gonna sleep on it.

This immediately precedes the stack trace:

Thanks man. I honestly would like to program but I'm not sure how cut out for it I am. Been a Unix admin for like 20 years and yeah, I can hack already written stuff, but writing--and worse, debugging--new stuff conflicts with my ADD real bad. But who knows, I've been meaning to look into python. More and more stuff is being written in it. Thanks for the recommendation.

ya i just did this...installed kies...samsung drivers, then downloaded the odin program...and nothing... :( i cant get crap out of it....the computer and odin dont see the phone....i feel like im running out of options here...

Try right clicking on Odin and run as administrator. I've had to do that before to get it to recognize the device. Don't know why but it worked. Hope that helps

Well, big surprise, I tweaked too hard trying to get video running. I think I'm gonna try some other ROMs for a minute and come back to Codename when the update drops. Time for a good full wipe anyways.

Since you are going to try a fresh install anyways you should try copying the files from the AOKP rom that TCP said is needed to work in Codename and then install fresh and see what happens. I have transferred over the files to my Gummy rom and when I get home later I am going to fire it up and see if that works..

I thought he said it was CM9 files that were needed and not AOKP? Or was he saying just the modded camera from CM9?

Good idea, I may do that. In the meantime, I have confirmed that you can flash CM9 alpha2 without wiping data. Went back through all the system settings but very little needed changed (launcher setup of course).

Odin EL29 -> reboot recovery -> flash TCP's wipe cache zip -> flash cm9a2 (twice) -> flash gapps 0317.

Working as you'd expect. Is a nice ROM to visit...

He did, but I assumed that since he had AOKP working right that I could just use those. This morning I dl'ed cm9a2 and pushed all the same files that I pushed last night from AOKP. That's what made the phone unstable. I was trying to backtrack my steps from last night and could very well have missed something.

Did you also grab the modded camera apk from CM9?

Edit: Yea CM9 wasnt too bad....alpha 3 should be pretty nice. AOKP is a nice rom to visit also, if you can live without 4g like myself. Also, I'm shocked you switched over to cm9 without data wipe, being its 4.0.4, but thats nice to know. I just gave AOKP a try and did a complete wipe including internal storage and system. I just backed up the internal storage files I wanted to keep and put them back into internal storage. Running real nice!

Yes, I did do the camera too. And /system/bin/mediaserver and some other shared objects (e.g. libc.so), etc. Whatever files the stack traces mentioned. But it started just rebooting the ui every 5 minutes or so. So I figured what the heck, I'll try cm9. I may run it a day or two then if no CNA updates drop, maybe I'll try a no-data-wipe flash of AOKP. I don't have any important data that's not backed up somewhere else so as long as I'm careful flashing I should be safe.

And, pssshhh, ain't no Sprint 4G within 2 hours of the capital city of this state so I'm not too worried about losing what I never had. Actually, I take that back, I think I did get a 4G signal once in Atlanta. Seemed quick but it's hard to tell at ~70mph.

Unplug phone from pc. Uninstall Keis and the samsung drivers, reboot pc. Then reinstall Keis and NOT the drivers, Keis will do it for you, reboot pc. Now plug the phone in and let it do its thing, then try the sfhub one click el26....not regular odin. Also try a different usb port with the stock cable if it doesnt work the first time. I have been here bro, stay chill.

Get Keis from here:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SPH-D710ZKASPR

And sfhub one click here:
http://xdaforums.com/showthread.php?t=1416477

Post #2, resource 2a....it will install el26/cwm so you can easily flash from here.

Well that worked man...thanks a bunch!!! I backed up my important things and wiped the whole phone. Like box fresh kind of wipe. This things is back to stock for right now. My phone is running now :D do you think UV and UC at the same time made my phone do this?? :/

    FAQ

So here is a little FAQ for the CODENAME ROM by T.C.P for the Epic 4G Touch. This will be updated with new information as time goes on.

First of all please read and make sure you do follow the install instructions fully. There have been people that have bricked their devices by trying to use ICS repacked Kernels to flash this rom and or backup/restore please read and follow the instructions.

    Q: Does Video work?
A: NO it does not. It will record and show up in the Gallery but it will be blank and will not play. The long answer It won't work for sometime so Even with a new build don't ask unless notted that it's been fixed.

Q: Can we update over a previous CODENAME Build when a new ones comes out?
A: Yes and No. There is a way to do this however it DOES NOT work for everyone this is why it's not a well know thing and not posted in the OP in the Dev section or in Discussion thread in General. If you do a bit of searching you will find it but be warned for some it does not always work.

Q: What's the Difference between CODENAME and CM9/AOKP?
A: More/Different options as the CODENAME site says "We do not want you to think you are using anything other then stock" there are tons of tweaks that come standard with the rom. Look in Settings/Interface as well as Settings/Advanced Testing just to get and idea.

Q: Market is giving me an error when installing apps (941/ect. errors)
A: Settings/Apps/Google Play Store/Clear Data This sometimes does resolve the issue. If that does not work Try uninstalling the update and letting it reinstall.

Q: When I try to install an app from the Play Store it errors outs (SD issues)
A: Try hooking the phone up to the computer and mounting storage and reinstalling the app/game in question.

Q: Lockscreen Wallpaper does not work.
A: Known issue no known work around unless you have purchased version of Widgetlocker from the Play Store.

    Q: Is SMS/MMS working?
A: Yes it does work. However some people have had issues with it in the past and currently also. The best bet is to install GO SMS Pro from the Google Play Store.

Q: Can we update Profile/Prl in this rom like CM9?
A: Yes and No. CM9 while it does have the option it DOES NOT WORK currently. CODENAME has the option to do this also but like CM9 it does not work either but it's being worked on.

Q: Can I use Rogue repacked Kernels with Codename?
A: No do not use TouchWiz based kernels unless they have been redone for this or another AOSP rom as things will break.

Q: When I use the Dialer it does not show my contacts as I start to type a phone number.
    A: Open Phone hit Menu/Settings/Dialpad Settings/Enable T9 Dialer

Q: LCD Density does not go below 240.
A: Use Rom Toolbox for this if you want it lower. however going below 190 has caused the Phone.apk and other things to crash.

    Q: Does 4G work?
    A: YES!

Q: The modem (cwm flashable) hangs on flashing.
A: 2 ways to fix this either try and flash it again and it could work. Or use Odin and place the phone in download mode and flash the modem.bin in the PHONE option via Odin. Odin is honestly the best way to flash modems as it 100% always works.

Q: How do I find off pulse notification lights?
    A: Settings/Display

Q: I can't get my GPS to lock.
A: If you can't get GPS to lock at all (this does not mean things do not show up in GPS Test since they are not going to) One of the few ways to do it is go back to a GB Based rom (El29 or so) boot up the rom turn GPS on and get a lock. Once you do that flash CODENAME or any other rom that you want WITHOUT turning off GPS and you should have locks once you are on a custom rom.

Q: Can I turn off the Menu Lights at the bottom of the phone?
A: Yes Look down below there is a file to do it. Flash this after you flash a new build or you will have to Odin back to the EL26 repack in this thread and do it that way but you must flash back to the Stock kernel that comes with Codename.

This FAQ will be updated as time goes on and issues that are found have either fixes or work around.

Screenshots and Video are in post #4. Thanks to elliwigy for the video.

    Code:
    * Your warranty is now void.
    *
    * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
    * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
    * do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
    * before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
    * you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.

    Install instructions for CODENAME

    Code:
    Installing for the first time:
    - Make sure you're running a proper working CWM like the one from CM7
    - Boot into Recovery
    - Flash CODENAME zip
    - Flash Gapps
    - DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET (as sometimes your calendar sync will not work) DO NOT WIPE SYSTEM or the assert script will fail
    - Reboot
    - Don't restore Apps using Titanium Backup! (Some users have been able to do this. This is left here just as a warning however if it works for you cool me know)

    Or

-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
-Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik cache
    -Flash ROM
    -Flash Gapps
    -Reboot
(Please Note I do NOT use this method for installs. However it has worked for other users in the past so I am putting it here since it could cut down install time/upgrade time.)

Updating Kernels if/when they are released (if there is not a repacked rom or a new rom with the current Kernel)

    Code:
-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
    -Flash ROM
    -Flash Gapps
    -Wipe Data/Factory, Cache, Dalvik.
    -Flash Kernel
    -Reboot
